I am adding an additional domain controller to my network
for the purpose of eventually bringing down the old
domain controller and replacing it with another new DC.
How would I transfer Active Directory to this temporary
DC? Thank you.

If you bring this server into the Active Directory domain
as a domain contoller, it will automatically get a copy of
the Active Directory. I don't understand why you refer to
the new DC as a temporary DC if you want it to replace the
old one.

In any event, it sounds like your domain only has one DC
(the old one). If this is the case, then it is, by
default, the Flexible Single Master Operations (FSMO)
server for the domain. The FSMO server serves five key
roles for your domain. You'll want to transfer these
roles to the new DC before bringing down the old one -
which is a bit simpler than siezing them after you've
taken down the old one.

I suggest carefully reviewing this MS Knowledgebase
article...

us;255690
before proceeding.

Hope this helps,

CM
