I am trying to install Active Directory on a new
HP/Compaq Proliant ML330 server. I used the "Startsmrt"
disk provided by HP. The installation and setup went
smooth until I tried to install Active Directory. In this
process, I ran the "Configure Your Server" setup and I
continually get the message, "The operation failed with
the following error! The Network location cannot be
reached."

Paul,

I have used the SmartStart CD to install a ton of 'Compaq' Proliant Servers.
Most of them have been the older models ( 1850, 1600, 3000 ) but a few have
been the newer models ( 380, 370 ). Have not done anything with the ML330
yet.

Anyway, if you have already successfully installed WIN2000 on the server and
would now like to make this server a Domain Controller I might suggest that
you simply go Start | Run | dcpromo. I have never used the Configure Your
Server wizard so I can not speak to what is going on. My guess would be
DNS!

Can you provide more details?

Thank you,

Cary

I have also tried the dcpromo command, I get the same
message. During this wizard it tells me that DNS is not
installed so when it tries to install it gives me the same
message.
Thanks,
Paul

Paul,

Does it have the IP Address of an existing DNS Server on your network or is
this the first DC to be in your environment? Did you give it a static IP
Address ( something like 192.168.1.10 or 172.16.30.10 or whatever ) and if
you did do this, did you enter that same IP Address in the DNS part of the
TCP/IP configuration information?

HTH,

Cary
