Active Directory does not start up - Lsass.exe

Error Message: Lsass.exe - System Error: Security accounts
manager initialization failed because...

I have read a number of possible solutions to the
mentioned problem, but none seem to work.

Is there some real solution to this problem, or is a fresh
install the only possible solution?

Boot in directory service restore mode and check your EventLog. On some
occasions, the fault is with file permissions being incorrect on system
drive. What were you doing for this to happen.
