Active directory DNS error?

I am running Active Directory DNS on 2 servers at 2
different sites. Both servers are Win 2K /w service pack 4.

I keep getting an error on one server saying that saying
that it is having trouble reaching the other server. I am
sure that we have connectivity and there is a A record on
both servers for the opposing server.

Question:
When you open DNS should it look like

Name of server
-Domain
-Name of the other server or should it be the
name of the server?

Both servers have the same machine listed here.

I hope that the name you used, "domain", is not the actual format, but
rather in the format of "domain.com", or you have what we call a single
label domain name, which doesn't play well once SP4 is installed and would
need to come up with a plan to change your domain to the proper format. If
this is the case, then that can be cause of concern as well with SRV
registration, which can cause what you're describing.

As for connectivity, you need to make sure there are no firewalls, MTU
alterations in the router or NAT between the subnets or locations, or that
will squelch RPC communication, which is required by DCs. Yes, you can still
ping if what I mentioned is true, but that doesn't mean anything when it
comes to domain communication.

By your description of the zone, it's somewhat difficult to tell, but what
should be there for your DCs is something like below (I made up the names
and IP addresses).

domain.com
_udp
_tcp
_sites
_msdcs
domain.com SOA server1.domain.com
domain.com SOA server2.domain.com
(same as parent) A server1.domain.com
(same as parent) A server2.domain.com
server1 A 192.168.5.10
server2 A 192.168.5.11
