Active Directory and dcpromo

I promoted an NT4 server to a PDC and upgraded it to 2000.
It is the only 2000 server on my network. The upgrade
went fine. However, I did not use the correct domain name
when I set up active directory. The xxxxx.com name.

Can I use dcpromo to remove active directory, promote an
NT4 bdc to a pdc, and remove the 2000 server from the
network? When I remove active directory does this affect
the SID database across the entire domain?

Do you have a BDC in the network? If not (and providing you have not
upgraded the domain to native mode) you can add an NT 4.0 BDC, ensure it
replicates all the account information from AD, then DCPROMO the AD DC back
to a member server. Once done, promote the BDC to PDC and you should be
fine.

I did something similar. Had to remove AD using dcpromo,
re-run dcpromo and gave the server a different name
(because of the SID thing). Then I had to do metadata
cleanup using Ntdsutil.
