Active Desktop doesn't update web page as scheduled - any idea why

If I open either of the following URLs in a normal IE6 window, they update
automatically as expected (about every 20 minutes for the small map and about
every hour for the big map):
http://www.iris.edu/seismon/
http://www.iris.edu/seismon/bigmap/

But if I put either of them as an active desktop item and create a schedule
telling it to update every 20 minutes or hour, it never updates unless I
right-click on the desktop and select Refresh. The behavior is the same for
Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Does anyone know why it does this and how to fix
it so that these URLs will update automatically on my active desktop as
scheduled?

thanks,
Leland.

Hi Idhcria,

When I tried it, firstly after I had created the desktop item and gave it a
refresh schedule (my XP machine has only daily updates available in the
schedule dialog by the way) I then selected Properties from its context menu
and the schedule that I had given it when I created it had gone! I then gave
it another schedule and again after re-opening the Properties context menu
the schedule had disappeared again. This appears to be a bug?

However while I was typing this reply with the seismic Monitor on my desktop
it refreshed itself (I saw radiating red concentric circles off the
Malaysian peninsular).

I looked at the source code and it has a timer in the html code to update
the map every 40000 milliseconds (40 seconds)

This may indicate that you do not have scripting enabled for your Local
Intranet security Zone or perhaps your Internet Security Zone ( I am not
sure which security Zone a web desktop item uses.. assume the Internet Zone)

I also notice that the UTC time does not always update when you refresh the
page manually so I guess that they don't refresh from the server if there
have been no changes.

Probably best to contact the web masters of the site to get an explanation
of the pages refresh behavior.
What a great tool though.
Regards.

I've also had the schedule disappear without my disabling it. But I have no
idea why (bug or feature). Regarding "only daily updates available", click on
the "Advanced" button on the Schedule tab and you can set finer resolution to
the schedule.

I added the site to my Trusted Sites list and made a couple of minor changes
to the security for Trusted Sites and it does work now. Thanks much.

Not sure if you mean Active Desktop or the Seismic monitor site but I agree
in either case.

Thanks,
