I used to be able to hover my mouse over parts of certain web pages in
IE6.0
and a little box would pop up with a little extra information. I can no
longer get this to happen on my desktop computer, whereas on my laptop
computer everything works fine on that same web page. Is there something I
can do to get this function to work again?
Some change in advanced settings or security? Using Win XP Home SP2.

Hi,
Go to http://www.dcn.davis.ca.us/go/EXPLORIT/java/JavaScript.html to see if
Javascript is enabled and working.

Default security settings should allow Javascript if a third-party security
program isn't blocking scripts/scripting. Go to Internet Options> Security>
Internet Zone> Reset to Default.

Can you post the URL of a page where this happens?

Hope this helps,
Don

Hi Rob :-)

You don't mention the version of Windows you are using, which really is a
must when asking for help in the newsgroups, but, try the following as it
may apply
to your OS and see if it helps:

1. Go to Start>Run
2. Type in "regedit"
3. Click Okay
4. First, back up the Registry:
How to backup the Windows XP Registry
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/registry.htm
then do the following

5. Follow this path to The Key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
In the right panel
6. Look in the right pane for EnableBalloonTips and see if it is set to 1
If not, the double click on it and chenge the value in the window to 1
Click OK
7. If this file is not there, then do the following
Click Edit>New>Create a new DWORD value
Name it EnableBalloonTips and set it equal to 1.
8. Exit the registry editor, log off, and log back on.

Hope this helps.

Hello Jan,

My post did state that I am using Win XP Home Service Pack 2. I went into
the registry and made those changes you described re: EnableBalloonTips (I
had to create this DWORD value and set it to 1) but when I re-booted I am
still having the same problem. Do you have any other ideas?

Appreciate the help,
Rob

Hi Rob :-)

Yes you did state your OS, my oversight and apology. I'm sorry, but, I don't
have any other suggestions on the balloons. Have you tried Don's suggestion?
If that does not work, perhaps someone else here will have a solution.

Hello Don,

I went to that java test link you provided and everything worked fine as far
as the java test goes. My Internet security settings are at the default
(Medium). I am providing a link to the website that I am having trouble with.
When you go to this site look for a movie release that has a yellow round
"nuclear" icon beside it and place your mouse over it. A short description
should pop up.That used to work on my computer but doesn't anymore. Do you
have any more ideas?

Hi,
It's the ALT text that's not displaying. It *shouldn't* be necessary to
enable this, but you might try Internet Options> Advanced> Accessibility>
Always expand ALT text...

Otherwise... perhaps a third-party security program is blocking this.

A Google search http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q="alt+text" turned
up some good information.

Hi Don,
At least I know now to call it "ALT Text". I tried the "always expand alt
text" trick but that didn't work either. I disabled my firewall and that also
didn't work. Are there some entries in the registry (Win XP SP2) that I
should be looking for (or adding) to make sure that the alt text function is
always enabled in IE 6.0?

Thanks,Rob

Hi,
Sorry, I lost track of this topic. A search for problems displaying ALT text
didn't find much. You might try re-registering the DLLs listed in the
Resolution section of http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=281679

Or, startup in Safe Mode with Networking. If the ALT text displays, another
program (that didn't start in Safe Mode) is causing the problem.

A reinstall of SP2 (if it was installed as an update) may help. Or, a
repair/reinstall of IE might help.

Don,
You're "boot into safe-mode" idea worked! Now how do I go about finding out
which program is the culprit that is interfering with the "alt text" function
in IE 6.0?

Thank-you for the help!
Rob

Hi,
Start with IE> Tools> Manage add-ons. You can safely disable then re-enable
add-ons. If you have toolbars which can easily be reinstalled (Yahoo,
Google, etc) you could uninstall them.

Some security programs may not show up as add-ons but might be blocking some
types of content. Are you running Norton Internet Security, McAfee IS,
Ad-aware Pro/Plus, Spysweeper, etc? Anything of that type?
