activation

I have a desktop running XP pro and a laptop with XP home
both registered and authenticated.
I want to basically switch, pro to laptop, home to
desktop. No equipment has been added to either. Will I
have to re-do authentication? If so can it be done online
or will it be via phone?
 
I think that you can upgrade Home to Pro. You cannot downgrade Pro to
Home. For that you'll have to do a full installation of Home. Both will
require activation, most probably by phone unless each was installed
over 6 months ago in which case it might activate via the internet.

You may do this *only* if neither copy is an OEM one. The license
for an OEM copy ties it permanently to the first computer it's
installed on.

You mean "activation"? Yes.

That depends on how long they have been installed. If it's over
120 days, activation over the internet will work. If fewer than
120 days, you'll have to do it by phone, but that should be no
problem; it's almost as quick and easy.
