Joe

I just got a new Gateway laptop and am trying to activate my XP. Everything
that I see say to go to system tools and choose activate. I don't have that
option. I have checked microsoft web page and don't see another way to do
it.

if your system requires activation, then there will be an icon in your
system tray next to your clock that looks like a pair of gold keys. Just
double click those keys and that will start the activation wizard.

if they keys are not there, then you do not need to activate.

Many of the OEM systems are pre-activated. In any case, OEM or user
activated, the menus are removed after that has taken place.

Using Start> Run and typing in:
%SYSTEMROOT%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A
will bring up a screen telling if the system is activated or not.

Thanks for the quick response, I do not have that icon in my system tray nor
have I received any popup telling me to activate. I guess I don't have to
activate.

The OS will let you know, with frequent reminders, if you do need
to activate. To check for yourself, Start > All Programs >
Accessories > System Tools > Activate Windows. Alternatively, Start >
Run > "C:\Windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A." It will probably tell
you that WinXP has already been activated.
