Hello all. I am building several computers, and I have
an Windows XP activation problem (at least I think I do).
I have a system completed that my wife is going to use
for her network administration exercises for school. It
has Windows XP Home installed and activated. But I
bought a copy of Windows XP Professional which I now want
to install on this same computer so that she can utilize
the networking tools not available in the Home edition.
I need to remove the Home edition so that I can install
it on another computer. How do I activate Windows XP
Home on a different computer? This is the problem with
all of this activation nonsense. I can't even dismantle
a system and transfer the OS to a newly built one, even
though I am abiding by the user agreement to install
Windows on only one computer. I thought that was the
idea; one system, one OS. Please let me know how to do
this. Thanks.

Just do it like you normally would. You will likely have to call for
activation, but it's not a big deal. I've done it a number of times, and
never even talked to a person, just got a computerized voice.

Format the machine that you no longer want Home on. Install Windows XP Pro
on it and activate normally. Reinstall the XP Home product on another
machine and when you need to activate you will be prompted to call a 1-800
number to our clearinghouse and they will assist you with getting the rest
taken care of.

If it is OEM XP Home, then you are basically "up the creek" as OEM version
are tied to the 1st computer installed on for life - nontransferable.
