Call the people who installed XP for you again. Ask them for the key that
they used. If they don't give it to you tell 'em you're going to contact
Microsoft to check into their practices. <g> Are you sure the key's not
located on the case on a green sticker?

Why are you bothering with e-mail if activation ends in one day? Pickup the
telephone and CALL the shop that repaired your computer to get the product
key.

So where have you checked so far looking for a product key? Have you looked
under the laptop or on the backside of a desktop computer for a sticker with
the product key on it?

If the shop gave you a retail version (full or upgrade) and did not provide
the installation CD then they did not legally comply with the sale of
Windows in giving you ALL of it. If it is an OEM version then that shop
gets stuck with being the OEM with whom you need to get the product key.
Microsoft is not responsible for supporting OEM versions (since you didn't
pay the higher price to include support from Microsoft).

If it was a retail version, and you have proof of purchase, use the Contact
Us link at the bottom of Microsoft's web site to get to the contacts for
replacing lost or defective installation media. If you cannot get the shop
to give you a product key, they committed fraud so call the cops (or your
State Attorney's Office). If they went out of business, you no longer have
an OEM from which to obtain support.

Uhm.. The cd key is still entered on the machine. It's just asking you to
re-activate.
If the activation is not working - then the cd key is likely invalid anyway.

It's been more than 120 days - so you should be able to activate over the
Internet.
If not - you can do it by telephone.

How to Avoid Activation of Windows XP

All you have to do is copy the contents of file wpa.dbl ( in
c:\windows\system32\wpa.dbl ) to a diskette (13kb) . Then copy the info
back to its original location.

And you DO have a valid key or you would not have run Windows XP for four
months... and it is probably your original key number... To know the number
for reactivation download "Keyfinder" this little app will show YOUR key
number
for the reactivation.

Use any of the two methods, both are valid and legal.

Backing up the wpa file will not be effective if the reason for the
re-activation was for changing hardware as far as I know.

Correct, as a hardware change will result in it being recalculated as soon
as the computer boots.

Also a key that allows installation of Windows may not be activatable, if
the firm is using the same key for many machines it might've been
blacklisted.

Sounds as if someone has a Pie(RAT)ed copy of XP.
Call Microsoft. Call the shop where you got your Install from.
