Well, I got 5342 from Connect this AM and installed it. Install is still
rough, but it's beta. I needed a new product key from Connect
specifically for 5342 because it wouldn't take any of the 5270 ones.
After the installation, I tried to activate it and activation failed.
It wants a different product key! Got a second key from Connect and
still no go.

I'm not going to put any amount of time/effort into an OS that locks me
out in 14 days, so if any of you run into the issue and know how to
solve it, please do post back. I was looking forward to seeing how this
build went, too. Oh well.

Let this thread die. I realized this post should have gone in
vista.install-setup instead and have posted there.

Sorry about that,

It's a problem for everyone, and there's about a thousand me-too!
threads from everyone who discovered it on the private newsgroups <sigh>

Cheers Mike, saves me from trying another install.

Was that the one which didn't work for you ?

5342 key is not activating either the x86 or 64bit versions of the new
build for near-anyone I can tell. The issue is being addressed by
Microsoft after the weekend - there being no rush while there's 14 days
to activate.

Thanks, Mike.

I'll finish downloading tonight, and planned to install in the morning.

It's probably better to wait for the new key before installing, I guess.
It's either that or wiping out the partition and doing it all over again, right ?

Well, we don't know. I don't think we'll need to wipe and do it all over
again. When you get the error message, there's a place to change your
product key so maybe a patch will do it. The key(s) you get from
Connect will work just fine for the installation. It's just the
activation that fails.

I've tried on another machine I set up in the house - also getting the
issues. I'll play with it tomorrow when I can be arsed... but I don't know
about anyone else, but I've just lost an hours sleep in the space of a
second, so already I'm not too happy... British Summertime my arse...
there's still snow on the ground outside!! :-o

Fat chance, Malke. Fat chance. The Beta Police are all over it like stink on
a skunk. :-}

You'll love it, Juan.

I wasn't feeling any love for it until I discovered my stability problems
were a result of having installed avast! anti-virus. Now it appears to be
very stable and I'm able to explore without it crashing hard enough to
require reboot every 5-10 minutes.

Did you try my removal tips Jeff?

No, I went with the "nuke 'em from orbit" gambit and simply formatted and
started over. I think explorer has crashed on me once but it restarted
itself, no problems. With avast! on the system I would've had to reboot
after discovering all of my programs had crashed.

I felt a bit silly afterwards because it should've occurred to me it was
something low-level screwing things up. I'd watched a lot of the Channel 9
videos and that should've clued me in that my newsreader crashing shouldn't
prevent my mail reader from doing anything. The virus scanner having
problems explained that all.

Ahh. A pity you had to take that route, but at least you know you have a
squeaky clean system now :)

AVG registered is working perfectly for me so far.
