Activation of Windows XP after major Crash

I have been recently besieged with Windows problems on what was otherwise a
stable PC. Two days ago, I had to rebuild the system and managed to activate
my copy of Windows XP Home.

The copy I have is a copy donated by Windows some time ago via an employee
and is a full retail version - NOT OEM.

I am now being told by the automated service that I have activated this on a
number of PCs - which is totally wrong - and that I need to purchase a new
version.

I find this hard to believe and can find no way to speak to anyone - the
system just cuts me off. HOW on earth do you reload a system on a failed PC
- brought about by MS's own problems of XP2 installation - when you cannot
speak on the telephone. All the help line eventually lead to a £40 charge.
This is scandalous when the problem ids Microsoft.

Can anyone help as the system from the PC just goes to the automated service.

Please follow this diagnostic troubleshooting procedure:

1. Download and run the MGA Diagnostic Tool:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

2. After running the MGA Diagnostic Tool, click
on the "Windows" tab and then click on "Copy".

3. Next, visit the following website and create a post in the
"WGA Validation Problems" forum and paste the
results of the WGA Diagnostic Data in a detailed post.
http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/default.aspx?SiteID=25

4. A WGA troubleshooting specialist will analyze the data and
recommend an appropriate solution.

First - if it is activated...
" Two days ago, I had to rebuild the system and managed to activate my copy
of Windows XP Home. "
Is this a problem with WGA and not the initial activation?

If so...
MVP Carey Frisch has this set of instructions:

1. Download and install the WGA Diagnostic Tool -
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=56062

2. After running the WGA Diagnostic Tool, click on the "Windows" tab and
then click on "Copy to Clipboard".

3. Next, visit the following website and create a post in the "WGA
Validation Problems" forum and paste the results of the WGA Diagnostic Data
in a detailed post -
http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/default.aspx?SiteID=25

4. A WGA troubleshooting specialist will analyze the data and recommend an
appropriate solution.

Next - what is "... is a copy donated by Windows some time ago via an
employee ..."
I am afraid that makes no sense. Can you explain that in detail?
(Read it out loud.. 'donated by Windows' and 'via an employee'... Who are
these people/places/etc? How is something like an OS donated by 'Windows'?
An'employee' of what? Just because it was donated doesn't mean it is
legitimate...)

Can you give the EXACT message instead of *your* interpretation?
Is it, "...the number of times you can activate Windows with this product
key has been exceeded"?

If so - choose to activate by phone.
That should be a choice.
It should give you a toll-free phone number to call and activate.
The call is free - can be a bit annoying to some.

If you are already trying to activate by phone - you left that very
important fact out.

I assume you meant your problems were brought on by installing SP2 (not
XP2)?
Why'd you wait almost 3 years?

After all that waiting - why did you not follow some extra precautions?

After all - the only logical reason for waiting I can think of is that you
thought there might be problems - and if there might be problems I can see
someone making an image of the working system right before they apply SP2 so
if there is a problem - they can revert to the fully working state it was in
before until they can get the help they need to get past the problem...

Thanks Carey, I shall try the suggestion you make. See also my reply to
Shenan's message.

I will let you know the result.

Shenan

Thanks for the comments. I will try the various suggestions made.

Turning to the questions you pose:

1. Next - what is "... is a copy donated by Windows some time ago via an
employee ..."
I am afraid that makes no sense. Can you explain that in detail?
(Read it out loud.. 'donated by Windows' and 'via an employee'... Who are

legitimate...)
Sorry for the confusion. Long story.
Early days of Window XP - we had a Church Auction. Microsoft via an
employee locally donated the copy to the Church to Auction. I paid for the
copy to church funds. It is a full retail cop[y and totally genuine.

2. Can you give the EXACT message instead of *your* interpretation?
Is it, "...the number of times you can activate Windows with this product

The call is free - can be a bit annoying to some.

If you are already trying to activate by phone - you left that very
important fact out.

I activated by the net 2 days ago after reloading and eventually wnet
through to an operator who validated the software. Yesterday I had to do a
repair - which destroyed SP2 so hence the reason for relaoding.

The latest validation had to be done by phone as I could not load
sufficiently to reach my network access. The phone option was only automated
voice. No option to speak to anyone.
It concluded by stating that the system had been used on a number of PCs
(untrue) and that I needed to purchase a new copy. No option was given just
cut off. A retry gave the same resulst as did the UK 0870 number.
I am now stuck (thank god I have another PC with its own copy of XP) as the
PC will not conclude the booting process without going through the abortive
activation process.

3. assume you meant your problems were brought on by installing SP2 (not

if there is a problem - they can revert to the fully working state it was in
before until they can get the help they need to get past the problem...

Much of this has been answered. I have had the software fully up-to-date
before I did the necessary reload from scratch 3 days ago. I do know what I
am doing. There was no attempt to avoid the updates in any way.
I am just frustrated and annoyed now because I had no desire to reload the
OP system.

I shall attamept the recovery suggestions and provide a feedback.

Many thanks for your comments.

I have undertaken the diagnostic check - following a clean installation as I
was locked out. MS still will not allow activation through the internet &
automated telephone.

The results of the diagnostics have been posted and I am awaiting a reply.
Not certain how long this takes.

At long last I managed to speak to a human being. In going through the
discussion, I was able to resolve the issue and the XP Home edition is now
validated.

I was appalled by Microsoft's automated service. No options were given at
all to speak to a person. Just the comment go and buy a legitimate version.

No replies from the posting of the diagnostic log other than speak on the
telephone.

Glad its all over and thanks for suggestions.

Hi Derek - I too have been dealing with this problem - shortly after getting
my Dell with Windows XP Home. I discovered what was installed was an update
from the 98 realm of technology and not Windows XP software. Then
supposedly an undate to XP2. I am physically disabled and cannot do the
handstands required to move the equipment - la, la, la. And of course, now
my 4 year warranty has expired and of course I'm expected to pay $39. Excuse
me, I did not purchase this equipment and software to test it for Dell and
Microsoft. As far as I'm concerned,
the Right thing would be to provide me - AT NO CHARGE - the equipment and
software I purchased. The testing is the responsibility of Dell and
Microsoft and not their customers.
Hope your issues have been resolved - as mine have not.

Hi Anita
Mine is working fine. Just took a long time to get through the processes.
Shame about your installation. Why Dell should have sold you a 98 version
updated to XP is strange.
We all seem to be controlled by Microsoft with not come back at all.
Why can't you reload the original system and take it from there?

Good luck

Derek

Derek - My computer does not download the reinstallation dics, and supposedly
the Resource XP2 is to take care of that, however, it does not, creates even
more problems. It's one run around after another. No I am not a computer
wiz, however, reinstallation is a straight forward process, at least I
thought. OH WEll, life goes on.
Happy things worked out for you.
Anita

Please check the recent e-mails between Derek and myself regarding the above.
I can guarantee you that I do not recommend any products by Dell or
Microsoft.

Hated to 'jump' in here like this, alas, I have done all these things and it
has been 24 hours and still no replies from the analysts.

I, too, have a Genuine Win XP PRo SP2, however, when I go to "validate" my
copy is states it is NOT genuine and it shows up my 'old' Home XP ID number
and NOT my current NEW Pro XP ID...hence, no match and then I cannot get my
*current* version, the Pro one, validated....

HELP!!!!!!! Please!!!!!

Persephone

Well, to make a long story short, I had to format the hdd, install XP Home,
dound out that my XP Pro was a 'fake' and am sending it b=to MS.

Now, I'm up and running!!!

Thanks all!!!! Love ya!!
Persy....

new license when the one I have should be fine.

Reasons I think why it doesn't work anymore

1. The PC had to have a new motherboard installed and the repair guy
re-installed windows using his disk and then my computer crashed and
formatted itself so I reinstalled windows using my copy.

2. Microsoft just want to make more money from me

thats all I can think of

I will really appreciate any feedback

thanks

Hi I am having a problem with my activation of windows xp professional.
Recently the computer completly wiped itself due to a virus, after removing
the virus I was asked to reinstall windows so I thought no problem and took
out my windows CD and begun installing it. I entered the product key and then
after everything was installed I logged on. I then got the message activate
within 30 days so I tried to actiavte it and it asked me for the product key,
I re-entered the same product key I had used to install windows onto my pc in
the first place and receieved the error message unauthorized product key
please use another by this time I was like wtf?! I tried to email microsoft
but they wanted to charge me for email support, I then tried phoning them and
receieved no help at all so now I am stuck as my windows activation is almost
up in 6 days and then I won't be able to acsess all of my work so I need help
and I don't understand why i should ahve to pay an additional £95 to get a
new license when the one I have should be fine.

You phone MS activation, eventually a real person comes on the line, you
explain you are reinstalling due to a virus infestation
NB If your version of win is an OEM supplied with the PC then it maybe bios
locked to the origonal hardware
