Activation Issue with Windows XP version 2002

I have found little info about this on the web or in the groups. But
recently I took a copy of Windows XP and installed it on my laptop.
Now, this copy is a valid OEM copy of Windows XP with valid XP keys. It
is NOT cracked or altered in any way. I installed this copy on two
other machines of two different brands and it installs as expected and
goes through a 30 day activation period.

The problem now, is on my laptop it is skipping the 30 day activiation
period and needing to be activated immediatly after the installation.

The other problem is that my network card and modem drivers are not on
the XP CD and I need to install them before activation. However, I
can't (install the drivers) because the machine is logging me on
directly to the activation screen.

I installed it on my laptop twice... formatting the hard drive. I also
did a repair install after the second installation and still no
difference.

Any ideas???

And I am aware that I could call the 800 number and recieve an
activation code, but I would prefer to solve the problem as opposed to
band aiding it.

Thanks,
RW

Hi RW,
And I am aware that I could call the 800 number and recieve an
activation code, but I would prefer to solve the problem as opposed to
band aiding it.

What do you mean by band aiding it? If you got the activation code by a
phone number, how would that be not solving the problem? Then you would not
need to activate it every 30 days.

One solution would be to create a new installation CD and to
slipstream the notebook drivers into it.

My reference to band aiding... By calling the 800 number to activate,
does activate my copy of windows, but it doesn't solve the problem. XP
should have the 30 day activation period after installation, for some
reason, it doesn't.. that would be the problem.

I would rather solve the problem then just correct this speed bump. MS
customer service is kinda lacking and anytime I can just "do what I
need to do" then move on, instead of having to make a phone call and
have to explain my situation, etc etc... I would rather know how to
solve the problem.

Activating the software isn't the problem... Where is my 30 day
activation period and why did it only occur only on this one machine is
the problem.

Thanks for your help!!

The license for an OEM versions of Windows XP is tied to the
very first computer it is installed and activated on. It is non-
transferable to a different computer. It appears you are simply
misusing the license and need to purchase a new one.

Carey,

Hmmm, see that was my first thought. I know that there are some OEM
copies that look for certain bios footprints to make sure it is
installed on the correct machines. What is stumping me about this is
the fact that I installed it on a generic machine and on an HP brand
machine with no problems. Then, when I installed it on my Panasonic
laptop is when I expierinced the problem. Are there OEM copies that are
made to install on several different branded machines???

Thanks for your time,
Robert :-)
