Hi everyone.

I've just downloaded the beta and am trying to install it. When i enter the
product key it hangs upon clicking next. i see this all over the forums but
no one seems to have an answer. have i missed it? please, if you know what
the problem is i'd appreciate some help!

cheers.

Have you exited setup and try again? Also, have you tried alternative
methods of installing if you launched setup from a DVD? Such as extracting
the contents of the ISO to a folder within an existing install of Windows
and launch setup from there or use Virtual Drive software? You are right
though, there is no specific answer for this problem, and I have not found
one, but I am looking.

try reburning the ISO at a low speed, 2x recommended, also do a CRC check on
the ISO to find out its integrity. Nero MD5 Verifier is a recommended
choice. If setup still fails, its likely a bad download.

I use the one from Ahead Nero
http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/eng/Nero_MD5_Verifier.html

Here are the MD5/CRC values for x86 or x64 depending on which every ISO you
downloaded:

x86
- File Size = 3.12 GB (3,355,598,848 bytes)
- CRC Value = 0x67E089E0
- MD5 Value = 0E733AB1A8E8FF9A8684FD3639332773
x64
- File Size = 4.01 GB (4,309,368,832 bytes)
- CRC Value = 0x48697711
- MD5 Value = E43502D0A15EADD551119D5639859E04

Paste the MD5 Checksum for either x64 or x86 depending on which one you want
check in Step 1, Step 2 - Browse to where you stored the ISO on your drive
and open it and it will automatically start the varification process and
generate the has in the third field, if it matches Step 1, then you are
safe.

Thanks for your answer. I am redownloading after failing to get the checksums
you listed. By the way, what is a virtual drive and how would you get it to
work?

Many thanks,

Daje

I am having this issue as well. I am installing from a DVD purchased from
Microsoft so checksums and all shouldn't be an issue. I have attempted the
following to no avail:
-Enable "Automatically activate Windows when I'm online"
-Disable "Automatically activate Windows when I'm online"
-Utilize Automatically download updates
-Skip Automatically download updates
Running Windows Professional XP SP 2 32 bit edition. I even tried Safe Mode.
Microsoft, please help us!

Hello everybody! I thought I'd share that I found a work around for this
issue! Please note, YMMV but this is what worked for me.

Cause:
Even though the install appears to hang on the Activation, I believe this
issue is actually being caused by Setup's attempt to scan all hardware
devices to report back which are unsupported in case the user wants to
proceed with the install. In my case I believe the incompatible hardware is
an Intel integrated 82845 video.

Configuration:
Hardrives: two hard drives, C drive with Win XP SP 2, and D drive also with
Win XP SP 2 (trust me I tried this with D empty it I got the activation
freeze issue). Vista will be installed to D.
Video: I installed a newer video card in the PC (128MB 3D Fuzion GeForce
6200, Newegg for ~$30).
Displays: Dual display setup with both monitors attached to the GeForce card.

Steps:
1. Configure as described above
2. Boot into XP SP 2 on the D Drive
3. Disable the non-compatible device(s) in your BIOS or Device Manager in
Windows XP if not supported in your BIOS
4. Reboot the D Drive and verify devices still disabled
5. Launch Vista installation for Windows XP

Vista Setup
Be sure to install Vista to the D drive so that you can still dual boot.
Now, if that works for you be warned that it appears to me the beta nVidia
drives are not optimized for Vista yet so the Aero UI nearly brings the OS to
a halt. By disabling desktop compositing you'll see dramatically improved
performance.

Good luck all!
