i recently purchased a new pc about 2 weeks ago and i
cannot remember if i activated windows or not. I know i
have 30 days to do this, is there any way i can find out
if i have done this or not please. I`ve been into system
via accessories etc but cannot find "activate windows"
nor is there a reminder flashing up. Like i said i may
have done this but can`t remember. Hope someone can
help, Many thanks in advance, Andy

Hi

You can see if you have Activated Windows by typing or copy/pasting the
following into Start>Run:

C:\Windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A

You'll have to allow 'Microsoft Out of Box Experience' access to the
Internet.

If Windows came preinstalled on the PC then you don't need to activate
it as it is most likely BIOS locked and already activated.

Much prefer to answer the subject line - a red-blooded male shouldn't have
too much problem activating a widow!
Do enjoy reading the odd typo.
However, can't add anything to Will Denno's response, just thought I'd
lighten the mood. Good Luck!

Not always, my HP notebook with XP Home preinstalled began nagging for
activation as soon as I powered it up.

I think there's a lot of differences between the way HP sets up
desktops and the way they set up notebooks, don't know if other
manufacturers are the same?

If you are not getting frequent pop-up messages reminding you that you
have "x" days remaining to activate Windows then your PC was either
pre-activated by the factory/dealer or you have a "BIOS locked"
version which does not require activation so long as the computer BIOS
is the correct brand and version.

Check again on the Start Menu under Accessories - System Tools for an
"Activate Windows" entry. If that is not there then you almost
certainly have a BIOS locked version that does not require activation.

Good luck
