Activating Use heuristics feature

Hi all - AVG6

I just have a short question regarding enabling the Use heuristics setting.
I am not sure if this is needed or even necessary. I have been given
information both for and against having the setting enabled.

I would truly appreciate any suggestions or comments regarding this feature
and it's efficiency or necessity.

Best regards,
Jan :)

AVG sucks anyway.

generally speaking i would tend to choose to enable heuristics... so
long as it isn't producing an unbearable level of false positives it's
better to have that extra protection on... basically heuristics is just
a technology to help detect variations on known malware... if it works,
great... if something slips by then it's no different than if you
hadn't had it enabled at all...

I have mine enabled on the same setup. I have no idea if it is better, all
I know is that if I keep AVG updated, it catches all I have received. I
haven't had a problem yet, (touches wood). It probably depends on where you
go..........I have a teenage son, so AVG is probably being used to it's
limits LOL

That was somewhat my thinking, that if it only caught a portion of them, it
is more than would be caught without it. If, that is, it did not become
oppressive from false positives. So far, the AVG has been working perfectly.
I check for updates daily. I also have Google Toolbar, SpyBot, Adaware,
F-Prot, SpywareBlaster, Zone Alarm and Stinger.

Thank you very much for you time and input. I really do appreciate it.

I can well imaging AVG is really getting a workout at your house. :-)) I
just figured that with all the junk out there these days, it might not hurt
to try to keep as much off my machine as possible. I don't use the Internet
that much, but, I'm a graphic artist, and I sometimes do research on the
net, and I am very glad I have the Google Toolbar for all the pop-ups and
junk. Clipart sites are becoming popular targets for junk ads. I am very
pleased with AVG and have thought about using the feature, but, there has
been pros and cons on the usefulness of it.

Thank you for your additional information, I truly appreciate it.

Aha.....so that's it. My daughter is a graphic artist as well....there
is our common link, grin. FWIW, she was on just 2 websites here one day
at Xmas.....Chatelaine magazine and a reputable graphic art one......and
she got a browser hijacker on here. So it isn't just popups you will
get, Ms. Jan. The Spyforum people figure it was when she entered a
contest on one of them......took her to another site.

I have found since I put SpywareBlaster on here that I never see any
spyware cookies, etc. A very good little proggie.

Best......Heather

Yeppa...that's the link, alright! <g> It is true that there are more of the
good sites getting hit with lots of junk. Now you know I always listen to my
mentors, and I have all the recommended goodies; SpyBot, Adaware, AVG6,
F-Prot, v16 PowerTool and an extra Silver Bullet, Stinger. One thing I
learned long ago was never to enter contests on the web. This was before
there was so much of this junk, but, there were other kinds of parasites
then. The human kind. Once they got your e-mail and other information you
were fair game for anything and every thing. All we can do is practice safe
hex, keep the AV's updated, and be as careful as possible. I try to be a
good student, and as ready for them as possible. I have added SpywareBlaster
to my arsenal. :-)

Cheers!

.....forgot...I also have CWShredder. Wouldn't want to get my nose tweaked
for not having one of the more important ones. ;-))

Guess you're right. As a kid I was a very diligent Brownie and GS. In those
days it was called 'Always Be Prepared'. Alas, in these days it's called
'Paranoia'. <vbg>

Glad you got the AV-Team watching out for you. ;-)

Cheers!
