My sister just purchased a HP refurbished PC with XP Home installed---she is
trying to activate the windows but its not in system tools nor in the
taskbar. She waited a week so the cable could be connected to the internet
first. Where should she look so she can do this before the 30days is up.?

It's probably pre-activated.

phone the numbers published in the paperwork received with the computer
re how to register.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

During the first boot of the PC the activation notice came up but she passed
it up because she had no connection to the modem at that time.
It said you could do it later from system tools--but its not there. I have
XP here at home and activated mine over a yr ago and the key icon still
shows in my system tools.

If XP Home came preinstalled from the factory, it was likely activated at
the factory or it is tied to the system BIOS in which case, activation might
not be necessary. If it is necessary, the OS would automatically notify
her, usually shortly after the system boots and she would see the message.

Ah, wish you had mentioned that initially.

Go to start/run, and type

regsvr32.exe regwizc.dll

OK, then,

regsvr32.exe licdll.dll

Then try the option again. She may have to do this in safe mode. Boot the
system, start tapping F8, when the menu appears, select Safe Mode and press
enter. Decline the option to go to System Restore and perform the function
above.

She has booted a few times since Saturday when she got the cable line--I am
going over her house and see if I can help her--she had windowsME before
this PC--maybe she's lost wouldn't be the first time.
Thanks Guys, I'll let ya know if we get it. I also emailed the place she
bought it just to make sure it was not previously activated.

You're welcome, Patty, be sure to see my other post in this thread as it
contains instructions that might get the process going if the system wasn't
already activated.

Greetings --

Pre-installed OEM operating systems are typically either
pre-activated at the factory or are BIOS-locked and do not required
activation as long as they're installed on the computer with which
they're sold.

The OS will let you know, with frequent reminders, if you do need
to activate. To check for yourself, Start > All Programs >
Accessories > System Tools > Activate Windows. Alternatively, Start >
Run > "C:\Windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A." It will probably tell
you that WinXP has already been activated.

Try this:
Click Start -> Run, then type "oobe/msoobe /a" and click OK. This should
bring up the activation wizard, and it will tell you if it's already
activated too.

During the first boot of the PC the activation notice came up but she passed
it up because she had no connection to the modem at that time.

Was it the activation screen that appeared or registration? Most Gateways
would come with XP already activated. The screen presenting the choice to
register might show up but its entirely optional.

On a system that has had XP installed from a retail CD, both activation and
registration are offered. Only activation needs to be completed - again
registration can be skipped.
