Gnome of Zurich

Hi all.

I'm not sure where to post this, so if this isn't the right NG, please
(gently) let me know where it should be posted.

I've been running Windows XP (Home Edition) on my Dell GX110 for about six
months now without much difficulty. To connect to my ISP I was using an
Intel 2200 DSL modem, which worked just fine.

A few weeks ago or so, I switched from the Intel modem to an Actiontec
4-port DSL gateway (in order to be able to connect multiple PCs to the
network). Thus, now my PC talks to the ISP through the Actiontec via its
10-baseT Ethernet port, instead of the internal DSL modem. This works fine,
too.

The problem: Ever since I installed the Actiontec and made the PC use its
Ethernet port, the performance of other tasks on this machine has gone
gunny-sack. Specifically, all sound-producing applications, including
Windows Media Player, the Control Panel sounds, games, or anything else you
can think of that produces sound isn't doing well. The sound is
constistently choppy and halting. I *know* this behavior started with
installation of the Actiontec.

I haven't tried removing the old DSL modem from the machine. Is that worth
trying? Anything else I should try? What other information can I provide
that might help someone give me a clue as to what's going on? I have 512Mb
RAM.

Oh, one more thing: Before there was ever any sort of DSL modem in this
machine it was on an ethernet LAN running Windows NT and worked great - no
sound problems.

I'd sure appreciate any words of wisdom anyone might have.

All the best,
Gnome

Never mind. Removal of the old DSL card solved the problem, although I
can't for the life of me figure out why.

Anyone care to venture a guess?
