Personally, I use GsView and Ghostscript instead to view PDF files.

From the GSView site:

"If you wish to support the development of GSview or wish to disable
the GSview nag screen, please consider registering GSview. There is no
requirement for you to register GSview. According to the terms of the
GSview licence, you can use GSview without any payment. The
registration fee is AUD$40 (approx. USD$25 - 30)."

So it's nagware, for those who aren't aware.

Some folks have told me that version 6.0.1 has been out for a while now.
But MajorGeeks.com seems to imply that it was just released. See
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3852.html

Perhaps the date on MajorGeeks.com is the date they started to list the
program. But given
the popularity, I find that hard to believe.

With all the security problems with Adobe Acrobat products, I thought it
might have been a security updated version. Who knows. It still might be
(even though it has the same version number. Knoppix does the same thing!)

It was actually released over two months ago. I got it on the APCMag
CD for Jan 2004. It does require IE 5 to install so I didn't bother.

My splash screen says November 2003 for 6.0.1

i'm just wondering how have you managed not to get installed ver 5 of ie yet
i figure you use win98 wich has ver 4 (the best ms o/s to date - i use it
too)
but the problem is that whenever you attempt to instal anyting microsoft
the installer first makes sure to update your browser
i got my ver of ie updated to ver 5, despite my strong objections, when i
chose
to instal a couple of office 2k apps about 2 yrs ago.
i never use ie, it just takes up space, but there's no way to get rid of it
btw, speaking of web browsers, i strongly recomend a freeware called
avant browser (www.avantbrowser.com) now in ver 9.
i use ver 7, without any probs.

cheers, peter

Can we try to be a little less religious about these details?
GSview is not part of the "axis of evil," is invaluable, and has been so
for a long time. You don't even need to register it. Consider that, at
least under Windows, GSView is basically the only piece of free software
that allows you to view pdf files. Personally I sent the author AUD$40,
and thanked him.

I think the detail that it pops up a nag screen (at least) every
time you start the program is a detail worth mentioning, don't you?
GSview is not part of the "axis of evil,"

Straw man.
is invaluable, and has been so for a long time.

None of which changes the fact that it is software which pops up a
nag screen every time you start the program.
You don't even need to register it.

Unless you want to remove the nag screen.
Consider that, at least under Windows, GSView is basically the
only piece of free software that allows you to view pdf files.

Acrobad Reader has been free for ages--and doesn't nag you if you
choose not to pay.
Personally I sent the author AUD$40, and thanked him.

None of which has any bearing on the fact that it's nagware, and nags
you to register every time you start the program.

Anything that requires an updated IE does not get installed. EVER. I
use Open Office rather than MS Office and Mozilla as my browser/mail
client.

IE is un-installed using 98lite and/or IErad. The first time I used
IErad I am sure that my system response time decreased by at least ten
per cent.

I use Forte Agent as my news reader. Best $US30.00 I ever spent. I use
98 for playing games mostly. For other purposes I use Linux.
