Hi there,

I installed XP on a machine and it would not power down properly.

Found the ACPI was disabled in the BIOS.

Do I have to re-install XP in order to fix this? Or is there a way around
it?

Thanks,

Gordon

You can change the Computer Driver (HAL) from an ACPI down
to a "Standard PC". However, it doesn't work the other way around.
You'll need to do a Repair or in-place install. To ensure that the ACPI
HAL will be used you can press F5 at the F6 prompt for drivers. XP
install will stop and allow you to pick which HAL to use. Most times
the BIOS will inform XP of it's compliancy and pick the right one for
you.

If you want to use sleep state 3, you must install the operating system with
that option turned on in the bios. I have tried to enable it after the fact
but the fans always stay on, instead of turning off.

If anyone has found a way around this, I hope they post with details on how
to accomplish the feat.
