The purpose if this post is just to record a bloody awful experience so that
it might be found on a subsequent search.
I had Windows 2000 installed nicely on my Thinkpad a20m and then decided I
would try and co-install Red Hat 8.
GRUB was installed along the way and the short of it is that GRUB messed up
my MBR something fierce. The result was blue screens indicating that the
BIOS was not ACPI compliant.
I am not a Win 2000 wiz and only now, after several days, have I fixed - I
hope - the problem using FIXMBR and FIXBOOT. we'll see if it actually does
the trick over the next few days.
