I have an Acomdata External 60 gig hard drive, model HD060U2FE-54.

I moved a month ago, I could access all files on the drive fine before moving, get to my new place, and XP doesn't recognize it at all. I don't have the drive listed in My Computer anymore and I've tried everything in "Add New Hardware" and nothing works. The drive is supposed to be plug and play and the manufacturer says that Windows XP Home has its own drivers yet I now can't access the drive and Device Manger says it has no driver.

I know the drive didn't sustain any damage in the move. It was a short move, and I don't allow anyone else to touch my computer hardware, so I know it didn't get abused. I have a ton or personal and business files I haven't been able to access for a month.

Any ideas on solutions?

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

are you using USB or Firewire ... and no, you do not need drivers perse, XP should automatically see it as soon as it is plugged in.

Check the drive out on another PC if you can ... check all cables, check the ports it is connected to with something else.

More detail

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm using USB. I've switched USB cables a couple times to see if that was the issue. My PC is six years old and I upgraded to XP Home two years ago. I've had the external hard drive for 1.5 yrs and done a move with it before this one (across the US where it was unhooked for 4 days), and it hooked back up with no problem, this is why it's so strange that it's having problems now (it was unhooked for abour 10 hours). Here's what I did:
I hooked it up to my work laptop, which is a brand new Dell with XP Pro. The same thing happened, which is this (with detail):
-As soon as I plug it in, it's listed in Device Manager as a USB Mass Storage Device (so it knows what it is)
-About 60 seconds later a tone sounds and I get a yellow circle, with a black exclamation mark on the device listing in Device Manager. (on XP Pro I get a message from the system tray that says "A problem occured during hardware installation. You may have a problem using the new device".
-In Device Manager I right click, Properties- in Device Status it reads:
This device cannot start. (Code 10)
Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.
-Trouble shooting takes me through uninstalling the driver, disconnecting the drive, trying again since it should be plug and play. Then you try going to Microsoft Update online to look for drive updates. I spent over an hour last night trying all this a couple times before I posted, yet no progress.
I also serch the internet with Google & Yahoo and found this same issue posted on a couple other forums in 2003, but they didn't get any replies.
Still stuck. Any other ideas? Thank you again!!!!!!

There are a couple of possible solutions ...
As it is using USB that is where to look for possible driver updates ... and that should be undertaken at the MB site ... not Windows. Look for USB driver updates.

There could be a conflict with another device ...
"Code 10 Error" means the operating system had a problem allocating resources for the Device. The Error Code 10 can be corrected by manually assigning the resources.

Is there any yellow question/exclamation marks in device manager ... looking especially again at USB devices.

and lastly ... the HD could be buggered. :(

To test the HD I would take it out of the caddy and attach it to the ribbon cable, as slave, inside the PC ... if you are not comfortable doing this, then don't. ;)

So, yes I have an explamation mark on the hard drive in Device Manager. How would I manually allocate resources? I've need done this.

I would be confortable doing your last suggestion, but would need step by step. I know I'd rather try everything else first, such as manually allocating resources.

Thanks again!

The yellow 'thing' should have a "+" next to it, click it once so it becomes a "-" and the device should show right below it Double-click on the description; this will open the device properties

Click on "Resources"

Click "Set configuration manually". This should assign an I/O range. Make sure there are no conflicts reported in the "Conflicting device list". Your IRQ should show with a "?" over it if there are.

Double-click on "IRQ". This will come up with a value for you. Make sure it does not show a conflict and then click OK

Click OK to set these settings and YES to continue with changes. This should clear your code 10 error ... hopefully.
