Acer Scanwit 2720S - "scanner not found"

I'm trying to get my scanner to work. I have installed the program
that came with it as well as a new version I downloaded. Miraphoto
V1.10 and V2.0.

I get two error boxes. The first says that scanner is not found, check
connection and power. The second one says "make sure there is a valid
source for your scanner in the TWAIN directory found in the windows
directory."

So, I looked in the Twain directory, and there are only two files:

Edscandr.ds
Relisyss.ds

I know the second one is my flatbed scanner, and both files were
installed on the same date. So neither is for the film scanner. I
figured I needed to manual put the driver file in that directory, so I
went to the CD. There is a folder that says driver, but I have no idea
what the correct file is. I also have a folder for TWAIN 32.

Any ideas? The manual is useless, and I have been unable to find much
information online.

Also, I have tried plugging it in to both my old SCSI card and the
SCSI card that came with it. It says it needs a terminal plug if not
used in a chain. I don't have a plug, so I hooked my other scanner
into it. Could the plug be the problem?

First:
You *need* to terminate the SCSI bus at both ends. Get a
terminator ... they only cost a few bucks (one could have
been included with your scanner).

Second:
What Operating System?

*If* you are using Windows XP or Windows 2000, you will need
to go to Adaptec's web site and download/install the "ASPI
Layer" software. Neither of these OS's include it, and it
really *is* necessary to use your SCSI adapter.

Hello,

I am using my scanner for few year and never had a terminator. Are you sure
there was one included in box? I do not remember, that I saw one.

I must say in a past few month I have strange problem with scanner. It stops
responding after one scan when using highest resolution.

I also have a folder for TWAIN 32.

The \windows\twain\ folder is for older 16 bit code, for example for
Windows 95 versions.

The \windows\twain_32\ folder is for 32 bit code, like XP and 2000, and
to large extent, for Win95, but some of that went either way, either
could work in Win95. 16 bit code is limited to 16 MB images.

Probably anything used today is 32 bits - XP doesnt even have a twain
folder anymore, only twain_32.

Thanks. My parents tried 4 stores while I was at work today, and they
couldn't find one. I was sure that CompUSA would have one. They called
me from all 4 stores, and I talked to the clerks at the first two. It
doesn't seem to be a common item. I will try again tomorrow.
Unfortunately, I was supposed to be having the photos printed tomorrow
morning. I did try hooking up my regular scanner to it so that
something is plugged into it. But I guess that wasn't good enough.

Second:

Win 98.

You download the latest driver for the 2720S from Benq. They are now what
used to be Acer.
http://www.benq.com/drivers/index.html

Click on Scanners.
For Windows XP be sure to read the Installation instructions. (Link)
You must have the Acer SCSI card.

You can buy parts including a SCSI card here.
http://www.benqshopper.com/scac.html

Also for XP, you may need ASPI from Adaptec, although, the Scanwit driver
includes ASPI.

I've been continuing to work on this problem. I downloaded the latest
driver from the Benq site with no improvement.

I also downloaded the latest version of Vuescan since some previous
posts stated they were able to get the scanner to work vuescan even
when it wasn't recognized by the twain driver. Vuescan also said there
was no scanner installed.

Any ideas on what could be the problem?

I have tried plugging it in to both scsi cards (my older scanner, and
this new scanner).

I have tried it with and without the old scanner plugged into the scsi
out slot. I do not have a terminator yet, and it looks like it will be
at least a week before I can get one. Several people have said they do
not need one though.

I have unplugged the cords and replugged them several times to make
sure the connections were good.

I have manually copied driver files into the twain directories to see
if that was the problem.

I am using windows 98.

Any ideas what else to try? And does this sound like a software or
hardware issue?

It is possible that you have a hardware problem, but don't give up until you
try the complete remove. Then reboot, and correct install.

I never used a terminator with my ScanWit 2720S.

Have you completely removed the Scanwit and Twain Software?
A failed install can prevent any the scanner from operating at all. No
amount of reinstallation will make it work.

Read and print Q6.

Question 6 tells how to completely remove the Scanner driver. The
instructions are for Windows XP, but work fine for Windows of any flavor.

i just finished it. Vuescan doesn't find a scanner, and Eudora has
lost the oprtion to import, so I can't even try it. I have no idea how
to fix that problem. Shouldn't that have come back with the reinstall?

I never used a terminator with my ScanWit 2720S.

Found one today and tried it. No luck. I tried that before the remove
and reinstall.

The only other thing i can think of is the scsi id number or something
in my computer. I also removed the old SCSI card, so only the new card
is in the computer.

What does Eudora have to do with a scanner? Eudora is an Email and News
group program.

If you do not have a TWAIN compliant Photo Editor, you will never see the
scanner.

If that is the case go get the free Irvanview with plug-ins.

Does XP see the SCSI card and did you install the SCSI card driver?
If the SCSI card is not working, then the Scanner can not be detected.

It you put the ScanWit on ID 2, with the push buttons on the rear of the
Scanner, then that is the correct ID, if no other device is using that
address. It has to be at that ID when you first connect after the driver is
installed.

Does the Scanwit initialize when you turn it on? The Green LED should blink
several times then light steady.

I'm sorry. I have been staying up extra late for the last 5 nights. I
meant to say photoshop. I used to go down the menu for import, and it
is now grey - won't even let me try, so I can't even use my old
scanner that was working fine the day before, and I can't try the USB
scanner that I have hooked to my notebook, which has also decided to
quit working. I have gone from bad to far worse.

Does XP see the SCSI card and did you install the SCSI card driver?
If the SCSI card is not working, then the Scanner can not be detected.

XP is on the notebook, and it does register an scsi card. The desktop
has shown the scsi controller in the device manager until 2 days ago.
But it has never shown the scanners.

Thanks. I will try that.

Yes, it does everything it is supposed to.

Okay, I fixed the import function of photoshop. I went to the recycle
bin and looked for any twain files that had been removed from
photoshop and put them back where they came from. The flatbed scanners
are working again. That is a huge relief.

Now I am just back to the film scanner.

Thanks again for all your help. I will try the ID on 2 when I get home
from work tonight and try it on the notebook, after I get the desktop
scanning prints. I have a lot of scanning to get done tonight.

Running WinXP along with Vuescan and PSP v7.0 plus original set-up program
which came with scanner.

XP doesn't like the latter and advised contacting Benq for later version -
which there wasn't when I tried 12mths ago. So I loaded the original
despite warning messages from XP.
Never needed the terminator plug.

If System is booted-up prior to Acer being switched on, then error msg
"Scanner not found" prevails.

Providing Acer scanner switched on abt half a minute before computer
switched-on and boots-up everything is happy !!

I have been using an Acer Scanwit 2720S for more that two years (without a
terminator) with no problems. Except for one quirk. If the scanner is off
and I boot (or reboot) the computer (Win98SE), it fails to boot and reboots
in safe mode. If I then power on the scanner and reboot, all is well.
Anyone else observed this behavior?
