When we login as a user on windows 2000 or XP the machine
freezes or expieriences serious performance issue. We end
up having to add domain users , as administrators, on the
local machine. Does anyone know how to avoid having to
give them full access to the local machine. We are running
an NT\2000 mixed mode domain, on two domains.

Hello Martin.

I would recommend determining if the issue is due to the applications and
services that are installed on the clients. Many older applications do not
work properly on 2000 or XP because they were written expecting full local
access to the system (such as in Windows 9x).

Check the task manager and look for processes that have high CPU
utilization. If one task is continually running high, this is the cause of
the slowdown.

I also suggest the following action on a test client:

The clean boot will allow you to prevent the loading of all non-Microsoft
services and applications. If performance improves for users that are *not*
local administrators, then you will need to isolate the problem
application/service by incrementally enabling them.
