ok, little mistake, tried to fix friends computer, she had the sasser virus, where your computer shuts down saying that the program lssas.exe is the problem. using the same method i used to remove a spy program from my computer earlier in the day , i renamed that file to lssas.zip to see if that would stop the shutdown

, well of course now that i have found out the real way to fix the sasser virus with a good internet connection, i can not start windows XP. it goes black after the colorfull windows sign, with mouse funcion but nothing else. she did not have her windows XP CD but i can get it tommorow, i assume i can boot it with that CD and change the name of the program back to lssas.exe and then carry on with my other job of removing the virus,. as long as i have the original disc. windows obviously needs all those little programs in the system32 folder. who knew?

don't want to have to delete everything for such an inoccent mistake. ok dumb mistake, but alittle help from the pros please. thanks james

You may be able to do it through the recovery console - see commands re: REN
(for rename)
