I have a wireless net work. I've enabled sharring (w/ full access). did the
regedit thing in Vista (LM something). turned off both windows firewalls &
norton firewall. made both on the same group. enabled netbios. and not
sure what else. On my network from my vista laptop I can see my xp machine,
but try to get access and get the access denied. I also looked for the
printer on the xp machine that I shared w/ nothing. The XP machine can see
and has access to the vista public folders but not the c drive. I really
wanted to use the printer on the XP machine and be able to share drives on
both. suggestions.

Isis, make sure that in Vista Network Sharing, Password Protect is turned off
on the vista machine, otherwise you get asked for a password at the XP
machine when you try and access Vista files; and you don't have a password
for it!
Shared Docs in XP= Public in Vista

Make sure that both computers have the same workgroup Name.
XP's workgroup name is MSHOME, and Vista'a is WORKGROUP.
Change one or the other so that they are both the same

Computer> right-click >Properties> Computer Name> Change . You change the
workgroup name there.

Thanks. They both have the same workgroup name: "HALLOWEEN". (don't ask)
Next idea?

Sorry for butting in..........

I've done as you said: password protect OFF, same workgroup names, the
works. My XP still cannot access anything on the Vista machine except the
Public folder.

I'm going to give up on this, since I can use Vista's Public folder for
network file sharing that way. It's just a shame I can't share as I once
did with my XP/ME systems.

OK I did all this checked everything twice. I can now share any folder/drive
from the Vista machine to the XP machine. So while logged onto the XP
machine I can access my vista's harddrive. But I still get denied access
when trying to access the XP machine from my Vista machine. This sucks. I
really wish windows was easier and more user friendly.

Well I'm having exactly the same problem. And of course HP (Vista Machine)
won't help because they say it's the Dell (XP Machine) that is the problem.
And Microsoft just wants my money for the privelige of helping me figure out
THEIR operating systems. Customer service isn't what it used to be.

I went to Internet Explorer then Tools then Windows Update. Then you get
express or custom as options. choose custom. I update several of the
"optional" updates. I don't remember which ones, but it seems as if they had
to do w/ peer to peer networking, file sharing, and/or remote desktop. Good
luck to you all.

OK folks, I'm in the boat where my two wired computers (one XP and one Vista)
and one wireless XP are in my home network they all can access the internet
via my Linksys wireless G router. The Vista computer "sees" the wireless XP
as a media extender and the wired XP as a normal computer, but can not access
any files from either computer. I've done the shared folders, and enabled
all of the right settings in the Vista network settings screen, but none of
the computers can access any other computer files. These same computers were
able to share files before I upgraded one to Vista.
I have kept up on ALL custom windows updates.
I need help, because my next step is to reinstall windows on each system one
at a time...and I really don't want to do that.
Thanks

You didn't mention firewall settings. Have you checked them??

Wow, after all of my fretting and "trying" everything...I disabled Norton's
firewall and turned on the Windows firewall...and Ta Da...the network works
perfectly now.
I can only imagine what I screwed up in the 6 month process to try to fix my
network.
Thanks David for getting me to focus on the right thing.

I have my Norton firewall up. I had to add some exceptions, so if you want
Norton firewall running it can be done.
