I have a new xp home edition pc which has the following problem.

During the boot process it reaches the xp login screen but the mouse
and keyboard do not work so we cannot login. The mouse and keyboard
are both usb. PS2 and serial mouses do not work either. There are no
settings problems in the bios.

If I swap the harddrive with another they will both work.

What i wish to do is put the harddrive in a separate machine as a
second drive and access it from that machine. I wish to do this to
retrieve important information which has not been backed up and then I
will just return the drive to its own machine and re-install.

The users on the problem drive have set their accounts to private so I
am retrieving a do not have permission message when trying to access
their data. Is there any way I can access these users in this way
given that I do have their user names and passwords.

Any help would be appreciated.

You need to take ownership of the files. Take a look here for
the procedure:

"Access is Denied" Error Message When You Try to Open a Folder

Good luck
