coffee man

hope someone can help
i badly need to get some files from an ntfs partition
i have a running win98se on primary partition and a damaged xp pro on
an ntfs partition....i have downloaded "NTFS for Windows 98"
[sysinternal website] which is reputed to be an excellent tool to
achieve this...unfortunately 7 files are required by the utility
before it will run...[why on earth dont they have them in a zip file
for download??] i have found 3 of them on the xp disk but the other 4
are hidden away on my inaccessable ntfs partition
the files are:
NTFS.SYS: got this one
AUTOCHK.EXE: got this one
NTDLL.DLL: got this one
NTOSKRNL.EXE: this file is located at <winnt>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
C_437.NLS: this file is located at <winnt>\system32\c_437.nls
C_1252.NLS: this file is located at <winnt>\system32\c_1252.nls
L_INTL.NLS: this file is located at <winnt>\system32\l_intl.nls

dont know whether the paths refer to win nt, 200 or xp install they
are not on the xp install cd
where can i get these files???

or conversely is there another ntfs reader utility i can use??
i tried Active@ NTFS Reader for DOS v 1.0 which did absolutely zilch

i should have backed up the files :( before fooling with dual booting
dohh!!...
i am hoping some kind soul can offer some advice or point me in the
direction that will extricate me from this mess

do you have another hard drive? you could put the damaged one
as a slave and see if you could access it from the win 2k or winXP
on the extra hard drive

Can you free up enough space on the drive to make another NTFS partition?

Like another person suggested, have you got another drive handy? Install XP
on that drive and then you can access those files, maybe copy them to this
second drive then reinstall XP on the original one? You should be able to
pick up a used drive for less than $20 and they are handy to have anyway.
Not sure how many phone calls to M$ that would take?

Well lessee now.....
Download the Knoppix disk image from knoppix.com.
Burn the image to a CD.
Boot from it. It's a form of Linux. You don't need to know Linux.
The entire OS loads and runs from CD even if you have no hard drives.
It'll see all the drives in your system.
Move over whatever you like to the drive your 98 can see.

It'll make no changes in your drives.
You'll need a decent amount of ram as it's all
configured/loaded/running in ram. Otherwise it'll run slow and ask if
you'll let it have a swapfile on a partition to speed things up.

Booted the CD to a win-like GUI/wallpaper/icons. It found and loaded
the drivers for all my newest stuff; 3.06gig Intel, ti4800SE, gigabit
LAN, SCSI drives, etc. It even configured the LAN for use for the
cable modem. In seconds I was on Google searching for the drivers for
a busted Win install.

Screw looking for an old dos 6.22 boot floppy. A dos prompt won't
play my MP3's whilst I'm surfing with no hard drives in the system.
A dos prompt won't see my NTFS drives or my FAT32 drives.
A prompt won't burn stuff to CD for me.

Try this link, there are various options for accessing NTFS partitions with
DOS/95/98.

If you have another spare partition or another disk other than the one
where the damaged XP resides, you can simply install another XP there.
Let's call this new install XPtemp. Boot from XPtemp and fix your
damaged XP from there. You may also try booting from the XP CD and run
the repair option. But frankly, repair rarely worked for me in the past.

Once your problem is fixed, just delete XPtemp and all its related
folders (Program Files, WINNT, Documents and Settings, My Music, etc).
