accessing "my computer" icon.

Recently I have had trouble with "my computer" after double clicking on it.
After I double click, instead of immediately displaying hardware, the
flashlight stars looking for the items in the folder. They do appear in about
a minute or 2. What have I done to cause this and what can I do to return the
procedure to instantaneous as in the past? thank you.
