I installed my original hard drive in as a slave to my new hard drive with
windows xp home on it. I can not access the files on the slave drive from
the main drive. The main drive sees my slave drive but does'nt think I have
any files on it. When I connected my original drive to another computer that
had windows me on it, it sees my drive and the files. Why won't it work in
the xp configuration?

Sometimes drives will not work well together when connected as Master
and Slave on the same IDE channel. This happes most often when the
two drives are from different manufacturers and one drive is a number
of years older than the other drive.

Try reconfiguring your drive connections so that the second hard drive
is the Master drive on the secondary IDE channel and see if that
allows you to access it.

Good luck

Is the current hd useing ntfs or FAT32 file system,FAT32 cannot read ntfs..
If ntfs is on both,go to run, type:diskmgmt.msc In msc,L.click on the unread
hd,go to actions,all,select,make active,close out msc.

The file system is not as important as the operating system. Example: XP is
capable of reading files on local FAT32 or NTFS drives. Win98 is not
capable of reading files on a local NTFS drive.

In addition to Ron's advice, you've double checked the master/slave config
in BIOS and of the jumpers on each drive?

After getting access to the slave drive, you may run into some "cannot
access" messages. If that happens, you'll want to take a look at the
following:

Andrew, please go away.

Your reply is totally incorrect. Windows XP computers can read both
FAT32 and NTFS partitions mix and match. I have 2 NTFS and 3 FAT32
partitions on the hard drives installed in this computer and there is
no difficulty in reading any of them or in copying files between them
when needed.
