I needed to be a fresh copy of Windows XP on my computer as I was
unable to recover from some damage that a program caused.
I made a copy of Outlook.pst before re-installing Windows XP.
After installing Office XP I put the the outlook file "Outlook.pst in
the correct location so I was able to have a list of all my old e-mail
again.
How do I gain access to my list of e-mail contacts. I know they are
still available but Outlook won't get me gain Access as it thinks I'm
another user.

Hoping someone can help

Regards Brian

How did you configure Outlook to use your old PST file?
Define what you mean by "Outlook won't get me gain Access...?" How are you
trying and what happens when you try?

Hi Russ,
I copyed the Outlook.pst file then after
re-installing MS Outlook I replaced the new Outlook.pst file with my
old Outlook.pst file
I managed to get all my old messages, folders and rules back again.
When I click on New (to create a new e-mail and then click on the "To"
to get Outlook to access my contacts list I get a message telling me
that I need Outlook to accept me as the main user before it will give
me access to my contacts.
If I try to add a contact, Outlook won't let me as it knows that that
contact already exists even if I can't see it.

Outlook also suggests looking up the help menu to fix this problem,
but I can't see anything useful in the help menu.

Regards Brian.

But what about your Contacts Folder? That's where your Contacts should be
and most likley still are.
Whenever you just overwrite a PST you break all the settings. You should
have reconfigured OUtlook to use your old PST. Now, you probably just need
to reset your Outlook Address Book:

Go to Tools | E-mail accounts, select "View or change existing directories
or address books", and click OK. If you don't see the OAB in the Directories
and Address Books list, click the Back button, then select "Add a new
directory or address book", then "Additional Address Books", and add the
OAB. Then keep clicking Back until you get back to the first dialog box,
and go back to the Directories and Address Books list as you did earlier.
Once the OAB appears in the list, select it and then click Change to make
sure the Contacts folder(s) you want to display are listed. If any of them
aren't listed, you'll need to enable those Contacts folders as Outlook
Address Books by right clicking the folder, selecting Properties, clicking
the Outlook Address Book tab, and checking the "Show this folder as an
E-mail address book" box. Make sure you restart Outlook after making these
changes.
