Brian

I needed to be a fresh copy of Windows XP on my computer as I was
unable to recover from some damage that a program caused.
I made a copy of Outlook.pst before re-installing Windows XP.
After installing Office XP I put the the outlook file "Outlook.pst in
the correct location so I was able to have a list of all my old e-mail
again.
How do I gain access to my list of e-mail contacts. I know they are
still available but Outlook won't get me gain Access as it thinks I'm
another user.

Hoping someone can help

Regards Brian

Are these contacts stored in the Contacts folder of the same pst-file where
your mails are stored? If you can open your Inbox folder but not your
Contacts folder try running scanpst.exe against the file and see if it comes
up with anything.

Thanks Roady,
is scanpst.exe a program that comes
with MS Outlook or is it a third party utility?

Regards Brian

Scanpst.exe is part of Office. It is located in;
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\<locale id>

I wonder if he isn't asking about how to fix the Outlook Address Book that
he munged when he tried to overwrite his PST file. The term "Contacts List"
makes me wonder.

That was not my question, nor Roady's. We are asking you where you are
failing to see your Contacts and how you configured Outlook to use your old
PST. Are there no Contacts in your Contacts Folder or are they just missing
from your Address Book? The term "Contact List" is confusing.

Hi Russ,
I'm currently running Input repair tool as suggested to see if that
fixes the problem.
My problem is that when I click on "To" I usually access a list of
contacts, and I pick a person from the list that I want to send my
e-mail to. This is not happening.
If I click on the contacts folder on the left side of Outlook I can
see my contacts.

Regards Brian

In answer to your second question
I backed up the Outlook.pst file
Install Outlook then I
replaced the new "Outlook.pst" file with the old "Outlook.pst" file.

Regards Brian

But what about your Contacts Folder? That's where your Contacts should be
and most likley still are. Whenever you just overwrite a PST you break all
the settings. You should
have reconfigured Outlook to use your old PST. Now, you probably just need
to reset your Outlook Address Book:

Go to Tools | E-mail accounts, select "View or change existing directories
or address books", and click OK. If you don't see the OAB in the Directories
and Address Books list, click the Back button, then select "Add a new
directory or address book", then "Additional Address Books", and add the
OAB. Then keep clicking Back until you get back to the first dialog box,
and go back to the Directories and Address Books list as you did earlier.
Once the OAB appears in the list, select it and then click Change to make
sure the Contacts folder(s) you want to display are listed. If any of them
aren't listed, you'll need to enable those Contacts folders as Outlook
Address Books by right clicking the folder, selecting Properties, clicking
the Outlook Address Book tab, and checking the "Show this folder as an
E-mail address book" box. Make sure you restart Outlook after making these
changes.

I tried running the inbox repair program, but this did not fix the
problem.
The exact message when I click on the "To" button when creating a new
e-mail is:
The address list could not be displayed.
The contents folder list could not be opened; it may have been moved
or deleted, or you do not have permissions.
For infornation on how to remove this folder from the Outlook address
book, see MS Outlook help.

Regards Brian

Thanks for your step-by-step guide Russ.
I tried what you suggested by with no luck.

Regards Brian

Wow, a lot of action on this threat since I left it. Thanks Russ!

Brian, the eassiest way out is to start over with your mail profile. Close
Outlook, make a backup of your pst-file and go to Control Panel-> Mail->
button Sow Profiles and delete the one existing here. Press Add to create a
new one. When you are done with your mailsettings open Outlook. Connect to
your old pst-file by using File-> Open-> Outlook Data File...

Now you only have to set this file as the default delivery folder. To do
this go to Tools-> E-mail Accounts-> Next-> at the bottom you can change the
folder to your other pst-file.

Question of the month: How to manage general contact info.
www.sparnaaij.net

Hi Roady,
I tried your instructions but somehow I have
ended up with two inbox's and my e-mail now goes into both inbox's .
All my past folder that are off my inbox's are also duplicated.

My e-mail was going into the new inbox, so I moved the e-mail from the
new inbox to the old inbox.
I opened the folder where the pst file lives and deleted the new pst
file called outlook1.pst then I renamed my old file "Outlook.pst" to
"Outlook1.pst". I now have the problem that I described above.

How to I remove the second set of mailbox's.
I want to keep my past e-mails.
I'm not too concerned about my contacts as I have re-enter my e-mail
contacts again.
There is a bit of a gap in your instructions about mailsettings.

Regards Brian
