Accessing computers on a workgroup

I recently set up three computers on a workgroup. I gave
them all the same name and each computer can recognize
all the computers on the network, but when I click a
computer to view it's shared files etc. It says
\\nameofcomputer is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of the server to find out if you have
access permissions. The network path was not found. I
am running Windows XP on one computer, Win 98SE on
another, and Win 2000 Pro on another. What should I do
so I can access files on different computers?

not only do you need to have the same workgroup name but you must also have
common ID and passwords on each machine.

For example.

ComputerA: HOST1
User: BOB
Password: FOO

ComputerB: HOST2
User: BOB
Password: FOO

If you have something other than BOB, FOO on HOST2 it will error.

Greetings e

Ensure all firewalls are removed while troubleshooting. Disable XP's firewalls on local area networks. It is only intended for direct connections to the Internet. Make sure each machine has the same workgroup name (default MSHOME in XP) and a common subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. If the subnet mask is different, they are on different networks
