Accessing alert popup bubbles?

How do users access the xp popup alerts (the notifications that appear
in the bottom right of the screen?) Is there a special keystroke
combination that lets you take action on the messages in those alerts
if they appear when you are working in another application?

AFAIK, the only way to access these is with a mouse click.
If working in another application, you can ignore the balloon and it will
fade. If the balloon was for a notification that needed your interaction,
there will be a related icon waiting for you in the notification area.

Example: If you have updates set to notification only, there will be an
"update" icon that can be clicked to start the download process.
