Accessing a hard drive

I have a dead PC. ( needs a new cpu) at this time I need to access the
second internal HD which has all my backups on it.

I am currently using my laptop ( HP Pavilion ze5185)
Is there any way to be able to pull the second drive and somehow be able to
get to the information on it with my laptop? I do not have access to any
other PC that I could install the HD into and get to it that way. It has to
be my laptop.
The Second HD is an IDE.

Thanks

Cindy

Ive never done this before but I think you can put it in a external
enclosure for a hard disk and then hook it up to your laptop. Most
of the external enclosures Ive seen in the cheaper end use USB
connections. Others use firewire and some use both.

The external enclosures are falling in price recently so you might be
able to find one fairly cheap $30-40. Im sure someone else has more
detailed info on this.

Something kind of like this. Im not saying this in particular though.
There are tons of them selling - Compusa, Mwave, ZipZoomfly etc if
you are in the US.

According to specs online your laptop has two USB ports.
I noticed though some external cases they say according to reviews
only work with USB 2.0 vs 1.1. Dont know if this is widespread or not.

The other option is that you'll need anyway, just buy the
CPU then the system works again.

Try to find an USB-box for 3,5" harddisks. Build in the disk from the PC
and connect via USB, or firewire to the laptop.

Hi,

Unless you are 99% certain that all that "dead computer" needs is a cpu
then I would quickly opt for an external enclosure to mount the old hdd.
If your HP doesn't support USB2 speed you'll connect at USB1 (miserably
slow), but you should be able to access your data.
After you've done this you can then use the external enclosure to back
up your data with programs such as Ghost or many others to back up HP drive
for safety.
Additionally, if your laptop only has USB 1 speeds you could purchase a
PCMCIA card that will carry USB 2 and get the additional speed.
I've gone to newegg.com now for several years to pick up hardware. Their
prices are reasonable and what's more is they are reliable and ship quickly.

Everybody is correct on this subject. An external HD enclosure is
easy to use and cheap. I have one for both standard HD's and Laptop
HD's. Use them all the time.

But, are you certain that the CPU is dead and everything else is fine.
You mention a "dead PC". That could mean a lot of things. Has
somebody told you it's the CPU and if so, how did they determine that.
I can't count all the PC's that have come my way with "dead" MOBO's or
CPU's that turned out to be hard drive failure, pulled cables.....you
name it. Just be sure it's your CPU by finding out exactly how that
was determined. Good luck

PC it self would not boot nor turn on.
Pulled the heatsink and chip and you could smell the chip , heavy burn
smell.
Doesn't leave much else to point fingers at.

Perhaps but they don't usually burn out without cause. Most
often it's a failed fan- you might try turning on the system
without the CPU installed but with the fan plugged into a
fan header to see if it spins. Another potential (but less
common) cause is a failed board power circuit, which would
tend to make the capacitors vent (cracked or swollen perhaps
with residue on the tops or bottoms).

That is also correct. You could replace the CPU only to burn it up as
well via a faulty voltage regulator (in the power circuit). Usually,
the capacitors are fried and easy to spot. Anyway, it's your
call...good luck.
