NO I"M NOT SHOUTING>
THIS HAPPENS EVERY TIME I HOLD THE SHIFT KEY DOWN TOO LONG>
AND AS ANNOYING AS THIS IS TO YOU< I"VE FOUND FOR SOME REASON THE ONLY thing
that kicks this thing back into normal space is writing a post to a news group.

Since it's an XP problem, yes it just cleared itself. But for the past 10
minutes, I've been highlighting everything on the desktop, only able to access
the recycle bin and status bar. Keys no longer had meaning. Even survived a
reboot.

Took a reboot and 5 minutes just to get to this NG to post this.
It would only select ALL groups and want to retrieve from all groups.

I went into control panel accessiblity options and attempted to find something
that tells me how to turn accessibility off. The only thing I could find was
the one that says turn it off after 5 miutes of non use. Sheesh.

This has happened before and not one useful solution in all the past 2 years on
how to turn this problem off completely.

Yes I'll daydream, my finger sitting on a key usually the shift key. Then this
happens.

I want it off never to return.

Wow - you even know what causes it and you cannot search and find the
solution on how to turn off sticky keys?

Go to Control Panel>Accessibility Options>Keyboard>Sticky Keys and uncheck
"Use sticky keys".
Also go to Control Panel>Accessibility Options>Keyboard, click the Settings
button on Sticky Keys and uncheck "Use Shortcut".

See if that remedies your problem.

If you hold a key down, the type-ahead buffer fills with that keystroke.
In the case of the shift key, that means that, when you resume
keyboarding in a semi-usual way, you will get caps until the type-ahead
buffer is empty. That's m theory and I'm sticking to it!

Did you try _NOT_ resting any part of your body on the shift key for
protracted periods of time? ;-)

I guess I forgot to mention that before the machine decided it knew what I
wanted and started doing this crap, it popped up the accessibility thing with 3
options. cancel was one option and I'm not holding shift to find out what the
other two were. Just that cancel has zero effect. It's almost like it's an
invitation to take control of everything.

But that explanation does fit with what happened.

Hand falling asleep on a key is not a solution. is there a fast way to flush
that buffer ? Course when you figure I have absolutely no control over any part
of the machine when that happens, wouldn't much matter if the solution were
written down as desktop wallpaper. I couldn't access it until I'd posted to a
NG, or maybe next time I'll see if I can't just open a text editor to flush it.
It shouldn't remain filled after a reboot should it ?

I need a way to get it to stop taking control if I fall asleep on the shift
key.

Sticky keys have to be on to turn them off.

And filter keys is the one about repeating keys, and the shift key for 8
seconds being the culprit behind this problem not sticky keys. I hope that
sticky keys never kicks in. This filter keys is a bad enough nightmare. I'm
sure I don't want the machine actually holding a key down indefinitely.

I've been at this one problem over 2 years now. I've tried all the 'you'd think
this would work' options.

Hmmmm, just opened up sticky keys, and toggle keys. Under settings it says use
shortcut. Those were toggled on, and sticky says hit shift 5 times. I wonder if
it interprets my holding the shift down as 5 successive presses.

But I've had all the main use 'xxxxx key' toggles turned off.
So it might seem that if the settings under the settings button are on, that it
ignores the main toggle to use the keys or not. What a surprise.

Simplest way is to test the theory. If so this goes into permanent hints file
as a solution.

Ever thought of uninstalling the Accessibility Options
from Windows XP. Believe that it can be done through the
Add/Remove applet for Windows components.

Well if it exists on your machine, I have to assume that I chose to NOT install
them this time. Cept for the fact that it is installed. And I have nothing to
uninstall it

Hijackware can cause such problems, Husky.

Now, you've posted to this newsgroup recently about another problem (subject
"repair ie6"; http://snipurl.com/ka4s ). In that thread, I suggested
scanning your system with a few of the recommended anti-spyware apps (fully
updated; e.g., CWShredder, Ad-aware SE, Spybot, MS Window AntiSpyware). You
said you did so but problems persisted.

I then suggested that you scan with HijackThis and post your log to an
appropriate forum. You said you did so. Can you give us the URL for your
thread in the forum, please?

I finally got everything under control. Who'd have thought a 1900kb hosts file
could take a 1 gig p4 w/HyperThreading to it's knees.
Dumped the 1900, since it really wasn't accomplishing anything with dns cache
on or off and found the 300kb hosts I'd used previously.

Now the system can run as designed with dns cache on, and a normal hosts file.

Also that hijacker's long gone. It was a simple solution 2 years ago, and just
as simple this time to get rid of it. Spybot got 12 of the 13 pieces of it. but
the thing that was screwing up the ie6 address bar was a single key in the
registry that hijack this found.

I then suggested that you scan with HijackThis and post your log to an

You posted on 25 Nov-05. Waits of up to 7 days are not uncommon, given the
number of people seeking help. (I see at least 40 posts predating yours
which haven't gotten a response either.) Given the fact that it was a
holiday weekend in the USA (helpers have lives outside the forum, right?),
it may take several more days before someone can get to your post.

That being said:

1. See http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=36480

2. Do not Reply To your own thread. The volunteer handlers will assume
someone else is taking care of you and will move on to another post.

3. Your log is incomplete: It's missing the Processes list. With #2 above
in mind, click on the EDIT button and replace the log with a full one.
While you're editing the post, include this reference to your original
thread in this newsgroup: http://snipurl.com/ka4s

4. Without being able to see running Processes, this is difficult to say
with any certainty but I don't see anything of concern in the posted log.

5. In your original thread (http://snipurl.com/ka4s), you found that you'd
had a CramToolbar infection
(http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.cramtoolbar.html).
It's possible that other such malware remains hidden, even from Trend Micro
AV.

Try scanning with the 14-day trial version of Ewido Security Suite:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download.

When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background
guard" and "Install scan via context menu."

Launch ewido, there should be a big "E" icon on your desktop, double-click
it. The program will prompt you to update click the "OK" button. The program
will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files: On the left
hand side of the main screen click update > Click on Start > The update will
start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. After the
updates are installed, close ewido.

If you have an "always on" connection to the internet, physically disconnect
that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back
into normal mode.

Reboot into Safe Mode, you can do this by restarting your computer, then
contiunally tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to
highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter. Then, run ewido.

Close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while ewido
performs its scan!

Click on scanner
Click on Settings
Under "How to scan" all boxes should be selected
Under "Possibly unwanted software" all boxes should be selected
Under "What to scan" select scan every file
Click OK
Click on Complete system scan
Let the program scan the machine

If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. Have ewido fix/clean
anything found.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of
the screen named Save report.

Click Save report
Save the report to your desktop
Exit ewido
Reboot into Windows and post the ewido report in a reply to this thread.

How are things now?

3. Your log is incomplete: It's missing the Processes list. With #2 above
I'm not an expert, but I'm not a novice either. I didn't waste bandwidth on the
processes because there was only one questionable item in the log, and this was
after I'd made all repairs.

How are things now?
everything's fine.
Trend got a few things, spybot got 12 of 13 parts of the cram toolbar, and HJT
got the address bar registry key.

I'm a moderator at another forum where HT logs are interpreted. If I saw a
log posted without Processes list because the poster said nothing in it was
questionable, I'd ignore the post. All forums require a full log to be
posted.

Everything's fine now but Accessibility options have been re-enabled without
your approval? I don't think everything's fine now.

Ive tried to give you good advice and suggestions. If you choose to follow
only some of it, I'll say 'Best of luck' and end my participation in your
threads.

This accessibility thing has been going on for more than 2 years.
