Hi everyone,
I would like to know is there a way to open an MDW file to
get usernames and passwords. This is useful if passwords
are lost or damaged. There could be some utilities to
open.. anyone know from where i can download it pls.
waiting to hear from you all.

User names yes, passwords no. That would make them pretty useless don't ya
think?

As an Admin you can reset a password to something, but there is no way to
recover an active password.

I heared people are saying there are some utilities to
crack mdw file.. but I dont have more idea how to get it
or how to use.

There is no legitimate use for such a utility: the only possible
application would be for people who want illegal access to someone else's
data. You are not likely to find help in a group supported largely by
people who earn their living creating robust and secure applications in
Access.

In fact, Tim, that is not necessarily so. Such a "crack" program may be used
by people who want illegal access to someone's data or application; it may
well be used by people who legitimately have lost the password, had a
developer leave under a cloud, etc.. I have known a few of the latter -- my
advice was to take the developer to court (but, often, it turned out that
said developer was nowhere to be found).

There are robust applications done in Access. There aren't any applications
done in Access so secure that US$150 will not get you the data (and, in many
cases, the design and implementation of the application itself, too), if you
have a copy of the application and its data.

Your data can be made much more secure by putting it on a server, using a
good server database, and using the server OS and server DB security.

Okay: it may be a counsel of perfection about documenting UserIDs, PINs and
so on, but it is repeated all over all the documentation and instructions
for setting up Access security. I would guess that the care taken is pretty
much in proportion to the value of the encrypted data.

Last time I asked whether anyone had _first hand_ experience of a properly
secured Access database being cracked, Rebecca R was the only one who
replied, saying she knew of someone who has seen it happen. Has time moved
on so that this is now reliably confirmed?

Not that I disbelieve it, I am just trying to get a grip on the reality of
the situation. Should we be advising friends/ colleagues/ clients to move
away from Access for sensitive data? Ok -- that is far too vague a question
to get a sensible answer, but you can see what I am getting at.

Agreed absolutely.
