Hello,

Front Page 2000 is all of a sudden refusing to publish, after one or
two files saying "Access Violation"

How can I fix this?

Thanks!

I tried to publish all the files, and it went about halfway, then the
dialog box got stuck on one file name, altho' the little papers kept
flying across, so I thought maybe it was still working.

But then I got an Idle Timeout 600 seconds notice.

Could this be the fault of the web hosting server? Or is it FP2000?

Would upgrading to the latest FP help? If so, what is it?

Thanks!

Contact your host & have them check the server permissions

Thanks for the reply. They're telling me permissions are ok. I have
FP extensions installed.

What else can be done. It will publish about half or more of the
files, then I get the access violation.

Someone please help me!!

This a server issue, they have to solve otherwise you need to switch web host.

Thanks for the reply.

They told me they want to uninstall my frontpage extensions, which,
they say, will wipe out all my files. Then they will reinstall the
extensions, and I can republish the site.

I definitely don't want to do that, since republishing the entire
site, with all the media files, would take hours.

Do the extensions have anything to do with plain vanilla publishing of
just updated pages?

Removing the FP extensions will not delete your files, just FP meta data about your site content.
You will need to re-publish.

My question is, could something wrong with the FP extensions be
causing the Access Violation problem?

iPower support says the problem is, that the FP extensions are
corrupt.

Could that cause the Access Violation problem?

Thanks.

Then they should re-install the extensions for your account. Using any other method of upload or
access the content outside of FP can corrupt the extensions.

I appreciate your prompt reply. Maybe I'm not asking my question
clearly enough.

1. Could corrupt Front Page extensions cause the Access Violation?

And -- I always upload single files with WSFTP, so if as you say, that
will corrupt the extensions, then I don't want the extensions
reinstalled.

2. Do I need extensions for plain and simple publishing of updated
files from FP2000?

Thanks!

Yes and using WSFTP, etc. defeats the purpose of having the extensions, since FP is not aware of any
changes to your site content and can corrupt the extensions

Without extensions, you will loose the ablity to get a complete function copy of your site back if
you ever loose your local copy.

Personally, I will not work on any site that doesn't have the FP extensions, and is not hosted on a
Windows IIS web server.

I could swear that I didn't have Frontpage extensions installed and
still published successfully for many months with the "only changed
pages" feature working. Is that possible?

That I don't care about, since I have multiple saved copies.

Are the extensions required for the "Publish only chaged pages"
feature to work?

I don't understand why I just can't remove the extensions from the
server. I really don't want to republish it all. There are many
multimedia files and it will take hours.

Maybe iPower can make a copy of the files and just put them back on
there?

Yes, FP can publish to a server via FTP that doesn't have the FP extensions, however you then can
not use any of the features that require the run-time version of the extensions or edit the
live/remote site in real-time.

Thanks for that info. I guess on the FP site there is a list
somewhere of all the features that require the run-time version.

FP2003 has the same requirements as FP2002 for the run-time extensions

I'm having mucho problems.

As a test, I was able to publish the web to another server (Server B)
of the web hosting company, where I have a different web site.

There was one glitch where FP2000 stalled on an mno file. I deleted
the .gif to which it referred and the mno file, and FP2000 finished
publishing the site.

FP2000 had actually stalled on that mno file when trying to publish to
A earlier.

Then when I went back to the original server (Server A)I need to
publish on, I got the same access violation error, even without the
troublesome mno file there.

In addition, another attempt produced a stall on a different mno file.
So I deleted that one.

Then another attempt produced a stall on an .htm file not in a folder.

Then when I went back to Server B to test if that was still working, I
got a "unable to build data connection, no route to host" error. But
WSFTP could connect. Then I tried again and got an Access Violation!

Since I'm using FP2000, maybe my program is all screwed up? Should I
get FP2003 and try it?

By the way, during this time all the FP extensions had been
uninstalled on Server A because we had assumed there was a corruption
in them. Server B, where at least the first time I was able to fully
publish after deleting the mno file, has never had them installed on
it.

I'd be willing to pay someone to fix this situation because I cannot
afford to spend any more time on it.

Help!

Whenever you have a failed publish/connection, with FP closed you need to delete the web cache
folder for the site with FP closed.

C:\Documents and Settings\<yourloginname>\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache

Thanks for your reply. I will delete that web cache folder.

If you could clarify a couple of things, it would be most helpful:

1. If I'm going to publish to a clean, blank server, do I need to
delete all the vti files and folders from my hard drive?

Or, can I leave them, because the files on my hard drive aren't what
gets corrupted?

2. In what file is the publish/don't publish this file (under
Workgroup) info kept?

3. What are the "notes" .mno files? Can/should I delete them?
Thanks!

1. Do not delete any of the _vti folder or there content, theses folder contain the information
about your site structure, etc.

2. I have no idea where that info is stored, most likely in individual files for each file, however
this should always be managed via the Workgroup tab.

3. I have no idea what a .mno file is.

Is it okay to delete the entire cache file, even though other webs
have documents in there?

It recreates itself or something?

Thanks!
