I access this news group thorough "news.east.earthlink.net", but I have
someone who wants to access this newsgroup but does not have EarthLink as
their ISP. Is there any way that this news group can be accessed if
EarthLink is not the ISP?

Most all the ISP's have news server. These groups (most of them) are on all
the newsserver out there.

Actually most ISP don't run their own,...they subscribe to a newserver
service and then just set their domain name to the server there subscription
tells them to use. So Earthlink's "news.east.earthlink.net" and Joe's
Communication's "news.joescomm.net" may actually be the very same server if
they both use the same subscription usenet service.

I used to remember what service my ISP used and I could change the name to
the actual FQDN of the subscrition service's news server and it worked.

I understand exactly what you are saying but I called the ISP that the other
person uses (bnsi.net) and they said that they do not have any news servers.
Can you help me any further?

Almost certainly. Most ISP's offer the equivalent Usenet access. Even
if they don't, you could subscribe to a premium provider for as little
as $7 a month (http://www.giganews.com)

This group is also accessible through http://groups.google.com and I
believe Microsoft offers web based access; as well and a news sever
that just carries the microsoft.public.* hierarchy. (Perhaps the MVP's
could chime in with the specifics)

What is the difference between the news group and Usenet Access (I assume
Usenet is a discussion group on the web?).

Yes, you can use the msnews.microsoft.com server.

The best way, no matter what ISP you have, is to use Microsoft's own NNTP
server: msnews.microsoft.com. This group is, for example,
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlook

Usenet is the complete collection of all newsgroups.

Brian,

Thanks that worked fine for "microsoft.public.outlook" but I have several
other microsoft news groups which do not show up in the list of "all" when I
look at that server. For example "microsoft.public.outlook.bcm",
"microsoft.public.outlook.calendaring", and
"microsoft.public.outlook.contacts" do not show up. There are others that
also do not show up, am I just doing something wrong or how can I find them?

Thanks

That's certainly here on my "msnews.microsoft.com". Have you tried
refreshing the list of groups?

Add a new News account to Outlook Express (Tools>Accounts, News tab) and
specify "msnews.microsoft.com" as the server. Use just about anything else
you want for the other settings.

Sorry it took me so long to answer but I have been busy.

Thanks, refreshing did the trick.

Refreshing the list did the job. Thanks for the help.

How do I get a complete list of the Usenet groups available?

There's no way to get all Usenet newsgroups, only the newsgroups offered by
the server you're using. Some servers carry the majority of newsgroups,
some carre a limited set. msnews.microsft.com, for example, carries only
the Microsoft newsgroups. Some servers are free, some are by subscription.
Your ISP (Earthlink) may or may not have a newsserver. Ask them. If they
don't Google for "free (news OR nntp) server"
