Hello everyone,

I am connecting to RAS using VPN by dialling up from a Win
2k pc and connecting to a modem/router which is attached
to Win2k3 enterprise server.

The user is authenticated and shown in the RRAS console,
but the client machine is uanble to access folders via "My
Network Places".

Neither machine is on a domain and the name of the
workgroup is "workgroup" on both...I've even tried
renaming one of the PC's so that both pc names match, but
to no avail.

Can anyone help please ??

Nick

Are you trying to access the machine by name? You may need to add a hosts
or lmhosts file to the client with an entry for the server machine, so that
it can resolve the name to an IP address.

Thanks for your posting Bill - I appreciate you taking the
time to reply.

The answer is No - I'm just trying to access the server
using IP addresses...firstly I dialup using a modem to
ISP#1 then I get this to connect to a dynamically assigned
IP given by ISP#2- my broadband host, which should then be
routed by the router to my server - as I've set it up
using a DMZ temporarily (so I know that it's not the
modem/router blocking).

Once connected I go into My Network Places on the Client
PC and click on Computers Near Me & that's when the fun
starts..

Whilst I think about it Bill - I've not set-up WINS in any
shape or form - is this necessary when I'm only trying to
access a server?

Also with the DNS settings - is it necessary to have set
primary DNS server settings and if so should these be the
non-routable server IP or the WAN IP?

I have the same problem. One suggestion that doesn't work for me but may
for you is to check for the existence of the IPC$ share. If it doesn't
exist then create it.

Try it. You may be lucky. If its missing, it may be due to a virus.

You shouldn't need WINS. But browsing across a WAN is always tricky,
because you can't fall back to LAN broadcasts.

If the server is running DNS, you should be able to use that for name
resolution. Let the client get it automatically at connection time, or
manually set it to the DNS server's LAN IP.

If the client has the correct DNS address (and the correct DNS suffix),
you should be able to see the server's shares using net view \\servername .
You can then map them using net use z: \\servername\filename .
