Got a custoerm's Hard Drive out of a system
as the MB is corrupted.

I am trying to access their c:\documents and seetings\administrator folder
and all I am getting is access is denied.

Tried to get the folder off of read-only
and still getting that issue.

According to the customer all their vital data is on that folder and
no backup exists.

How do I access this folder?

You didn't state the OS. If WinXP...
Right-click the administrator folder, click Properties, "Security" tab, "Advanced" button,
"Owner" tab, change the owner to you (click on your account to highlight it), check the box,
"Replace owner on subcontainers and objects", click OK

Correct answer

but one can also simply boot with a live Linux cd and copy the data off
from there

Why waste time searching for the cd, download it, burn it, boot it, etc, etc, when just a few
right-clicks gets the job done in a minute or two??

I've been burned by Ubuntu Live CDs three times now! They can make
Windows totally unbootable (thank goodness for backups). I will never
use them on any system that has Windows on any of the hard drives.

Why not use something much safer and won't screw up Windows in the
process like BartPE or WinPE?

ROTFL! I wish I had a nickel for every clueless person who said this.

I don't care if you are Linus Torvalds himself, you are still wrong!
What good is open source if dumb people like you don't even bother to
read it? Seriously!

If you ever bothered to check, Ubuntu Live checks for a Windows
partition and then grabs the Windows swapfile for its own use while
running. It doesn't ask the user's permission. Nor does it tell the user
it is doing so. Like most Linux users I know who have been using it for
10 years, are sneaky and lie about it and often claims it is a user
error and that Linux is perfect and doesn't make mistakes. But that is
why *most* Linux users are clueless. They have no idea what they are
talking about most of the time.

But alas, Linux is sneaky and does things like this all of the time. And
Windows SSD users are told by Microsoft and anybody worth a darn to turn
off the Windows swapfile. This prevents excessive writing to the SSD
which prolongs the life of the SSD. And it works great if you have
enough RAM.

But smartass Ubuntu Live isn't happy about it. So it creates its own
Windows swapfile for it to use. FIRST OF ALL UBUNTU HAS NO BUSINESS
MESSING WITH THE WINDOWS PARTITION AT ALL! And what happens when you
boot Windows the next time, Windows starts up the Windows installer and
thinks it is supposed to install something (it doesn't know what) and
hangs. And Windows is left totally unusable. ALL COMPLIMENTS OF UBUNTU
LIVE!

So I really get so sick and tired of clowns like you showing up and
pretending to be some sort of expert. When you haven't even learned how
to RTFM yet. Yes I have used Linux for just as long as you and longer,
but at least I can RTFM and the source code to boot! Nor will I lie
about Linux or make promises that Linux can do something I know it
can't!
