Access to Excel

I have designed a database and it is running smootly in Access 2003 but I
need to analyse the data in more depth than I can in Excel.

Therefore, I have tried to use Excel and to import the data, but everytime I
try to do this, I get an error message when i test the connection saying i do
not have permission. I type in my password and nothing happens. I have
secuity on this and the current database runs from a shortcut to the front
end and I cannot open the front end by itself as it is due to the
"permissions"

Any ideas as to how I can get round this and develop a link between the two
so that when Access data changes, it in turn updates the Excel file?

Many THanks,
Matt

You cannot update data in an Excel file linked as a table. Microsoft lost a
lawsuit that required they disable that functionality. You can read from it,
but you can't writ e to it.

There are two alternatives. The easier is to import the spreadsheet,
manipulate it as a table, then export it. The other involves using
Automation (COM). This is opening a spreadsheet as an Excel object and using
VBA to manipulate the data.

I exported data as a pivot table into excel but I coudl not get this to link
I do not think.

I am not sure if we got our wires crossed or if I just am not understanding
but surely you can import data from Access into Excel as there is an option
to do this. It seems that the security is stopping me from doing this. I
follow the route
Menu-Data, Import External Data, Import Data. THrough that i cannot get it
to work or through MS Query!

Sorry, Matt, I totally misread the question. Certainly you can import data
from Excel into Access.
When you say you have security on, what do you mean? Are you using Access
Workgroup Security, or do you mean Macro Security?

I have Access workgroup security.

It asks me to enter a password but when I do nothing happens. Also I keep
getting the message about user permissions and being unable to access. If i
try to open the actual front end this is the message i get usually but it
works wheen I use the shortcut to open it

Matt,
I am not really good with Security. Don't mean to put you off, but I would
suggest you post your question in the Security newsgroup. I would bet you
will get a much better answer there than I can provide.
