Hi Janyce,
You failed to mention important details such as:
- How you trying to access the drive... Using Explorer, CDRW software such as Easy
CD Creator and Nero, a batch file, etc?
- What you mean when you say "only the Administrator has access to the drive".... Is
there an error message?
So I am not sure this will help, but... If you are running NTFS you (logged in as a
member of the Administrators group) can set permissions on the object (CDR) using the
Security tab accessed through Computer Management (compmgmt.msc) > Removable Storage
Physical Locations > name of the CDR. For more information, run Computer
Management (compmgmt.msc), click [menu bar] Action > Help, and search for the help
topics titled: "To add users for access to Removable Storage", "To change user
permissions for Removable Storage".
In regards to your statement: "Giving myself Administrator preludes doesn't help - I
need to log out and log in again." If you mean that you are using Local Users and
Groups (lusrmgr.msc) > Your Username > Properties [sheet] > Member of [tab] > to Add
Administrators. And you are expecting that action (alone) to automatically give you
Administrative privileges. It does not work this way. You must (at least) log out
and log back in.
Also keep in mind that most CDRW software requires users to be members of the
Administrator group in order to burn CDs. As a matter of fact, my Easy CD Creator 4
software recommends that you log in as the built-in Administrator (not just a user
who is a member of the Administrators group) and I do not know of any workaround that
allows members of other groups to burn CDs. If you use Nero, you can download (from
the Nero Web site), a tool called "Nero BurnRights" that will let members of other
groups burn CDs.

: I've recently replaced the CD-ROM on my Win2k pro computer with a CDR.
: Unfortunately, only the Administrator has access to the the drive, even to
: read the rontents of the disk. Giving myself Administrator priledges doesn't
: help - I need to log out and log in again. This is a real pain.
:
: How can I change the settings to allow regular users to access the drive?
:
: Even more perplexing is that anyone can read and write to the Zip drive, but
: ont to the CD.
