Situation:
I have one workgroup(NOT domain) which contains two
computer, two computers are win 2K Pro. When I want to
access the shared file within one of the computer through
the UNC path or through the My Network places, the windows
2000 prompts me to input username and password.

3 Questions to ask:
Q1)Does this mean if I don't know the username and
password of the target computer which stores the shared
files, I can never use or access the shared files?

Q2)Why there is such prompt to ask for username and
password?

Q3)How can I successfully access the network resources in
Windows 2000?

In a workgroup you'll have to make sure that all useraccounts exist on all
computers and that they are in the same workgroup.

** If you don't know any of the username and pssword of the target
computer,
you can never use or access the shared file.
*** You have to make both the exactly same username and password
on both of Windows2K.
Q2)Why there is such prompt to ask for username and
password?
** Security issue,
Unless you have not yet registered your username and password
to tha target machine, then you have to be rejected by the target
computer's
seurity.
Once you register your username and password onto the taget machine,
then you can be eligibel to access the target PC.
make sense?
Q3)How can I successfully access the network resources in

If the resouses are not uner your username , then
in addition to above , you have to set the access-permition to your
username,
by the owner(another user) of the resouce.

Good Luck!
In case you can not resolve this matter, then I can tell more.

Hi! john wen,
Additional remarks for you;
Supposing that two computers are yours and just for File & Printer Sharing
purpose,
, and you can do anything,
then, you can use NetBUEI protcol instead of TCP/IP protocol,
and username is Adminstrator,
these setting can work easier for your purpose.
If these can work, then you can get some clue from this set of trial.
