Access slow to server with newly formatted computer

Something happened to my network where computers were
sending out large amounts of data to each other and
bogging down our network, so I had to format many
computers and it fixed the problem. Now I face another
problem, all these computers that I formated (run win2k)
access a program on a win nt server very slowly. The
connection is fine between them, able to transfer files
across the network at good speeds, but when it comes to
accessing data from the server through this program the
speed is very slow. I was watching how many bytes were
being recieved/sent as the program was starting and it
was incrementing extremely slow, as the computers that
weren't affected are able to get get data from the server
much faster. I've tried everything I can possibly think
of, but cannot figure out why this is happening. Any help
would be appreciated.

Make sure you installed the service packs on the computers you reinstalled. There
must be a difference in a setting somewhere between the new and the old. I would
check the security options in Local Security Policy line by line with the W2K
computers that can access the NT server to make sure they are the same especially for
digitally sign communications and lan manager authentication level or you can export
and import the security settings from one to another via a .inf template to see if
that helps via Local Security Policy - secpol.msc. --- Steve

I have tried importing the security policies, and its
still not working. This is very confusing, I don't see
how two computers on the same network could be access
data off the server at different speeds!! The computers
are almost identical, I think I will try cloning the hard
drive and see what that does. If any other suggestions
please help.

Hmm. Try on at least one of the "fixed" computers to make sure that the service pack
and critical updates are all the same. You can look in add/remove programs to see
what has been installed. Check that the settings for the network adapters are the
same in their properties. Until you have the problem resolved, go into the Local
Security Policy of a W2K computer and under security settings/local policies/security
options make sure that the two settings for "digitally sign communications (always)"
server and client are disabled and the two for (when possible) are enabled.

You could also try running netmon on the server and download and install the free
Ethereal packet sniffer on a client computer to look at the packet exchange sequence
that is going on between the server and the client which may show what the problem is
or where to look. -- Steve
