I need some help with this problem. I gave my old laptop computer to a good
friend who never used one. He had XP pro installed and went on his way. He
recently and unexpected died. I now have the computer back and I cannot get
past the signon. guest appears disabled and admin I have tried all combo I
can think he might have used to no avail. What can I do other then
re-install Windows?

In XP Home, boot the computer into Safe Mode. Do this by repeatedly
tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up. This will get you to
the right menu. Navigate using your Up arrow key; the mouse will not
work here. Once in Safe Mode, you will see the normally hidden
Administrator account. The default password is a blank.

In XP Pro, you do not need to go into Safe Mode. At the Welcome Screen,
do Ctrl-Alt-Del twice to get the classic Windows logon box. Type in
"Administrator" and whatever password you assigned when you set up
Windows.

If you reset the built-in Administrator account's password in Home or
have Pro and don't remember the password, use NTpasswd to change the
built-in Administrator account's password to a blank. Then go to the
User Accounts applet in Control Panel and set passwords that you will
remember and make other desired changes.

Here is one place to download and create an utility just
for situations like this:

thanks I have tried the safe mode before but this get me nowhere. I seem to
get the same sign on screen in the mode and I am blocked. I did not set this
computer up so I am out of luck of far as the pass word goes. Any other
suggestions?

thanks for info but I am not using NT. I am using XP Pro on this computer.
again, I have tried the safe mode and can't get past. He must have assigned
a password to the Admin account and I havn't a clue as to what it might be.

Note that Windows XP is a derivative of Windows NT and this
program will work with it. The utility is really from Linux
but allows an administrator to change the log on password in
order to start the system.

FYI:
(Windows XP = Windows NT 5.1; Windows 2000 = Windows NT 5.0.)

Catherine,

Sometimes the password hasn't been set, its "blank" but it still asks for
one.

Either make and use the NTpasswd utility as I suggested - and yes, it
works just fine on XP - or take the machine to a local professional who
will have no problem changing the Administrator password and getting
into the machine.

If what you are talking about is really a *BIOS* password and *not* a
Windows password, we have a different kettle of fish. A BIOS password
will appear as soon as you turn the machine on, before the operating
system (Windows) is even loaded. If this is the case, the method of
removing the BIOS password on a laptop depends on the laptop make. If
this is really what your issue is, then post back with the laptop make.
