I am an access newbie and somehow password protected my
database! I am not sure how I did it but everytime I try
and open the .mdb it asks for a password.

Is there anything I can do? I have spent weeks doing it
please dont tell me all is lost!

Thanks in advance,

Brow

Is it asking for a password, or a UserID and password? There is a
difference.

Do you not have a backup copy that will let you in without the password?

Just the password. I have tried opening it while holding shift (which does
nothing) and my backup version was made a while ago. Many changes have been
made since!

Thanks for your help

There is no official way to help you, but if you do some searches for
"cracking" software, you should find some utilities that will help you.
"Cracking" the database password is actually pretty easy to do, which is why
most people don't recommend using a database password if you want good
security.

Thanks for your help. I will try that.

Do you know any that are free, they all appear to want to charge for the
service?

Feel a bit stupid. Do not know how I managed it!

Just so you know, files that are severely corrupted will often prompt for a
password even though none was ever assigned. This might be what you are
seeing.

Rick Brandt has a good point. You might try compacting and repairing. You
might also locate and download a free product called "JETCOMP" which can be
used to compact and repair your database. I've found that it helps in cases
where you have a bad file.

Unfortunately, when a password is being prompted for due to a corruption,
that's about a 99.9999% indication that the database is corrupted beyond
repair. The only hope is most likely to contact a data recovery service such
as www.pksolutions.com to get the data back. They cannot recover any forms,
reports, etc.
