Access Password requested

I have a database that I'm trying to convert to Access 2003 from what I
assume is a 2000 version. When I attempt to open the database in design view
or exclusively a message box appears asking me for a password. The users who
this database belongs to have no idea what the password is. Is there a way
to turn off the prompt for a password in this application?

By the way the exact wording for the password is as follows: Password
Required in the title bar of the message box followed by 'Enter database
password' in the body of the window with a text box for entering the
password.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
Someone has set a password on the database, or possibly, the database
has been corrupted by being opened in MS Word, or somesuch.

Get a "known good" copy of the database & try again.
