Access now prompts for password where didn't before. HELP!

Could someone help me please? After upgrading to Access
2000, I'm now prompted for a password where I wasn't
prompted before. One of the SAs upgraded my box and
nobody knows how to fix the problem. I'm so lost and
don't know what to do.

Is it asking when you start Access or when you try to open a database?
If the second, have you tried a different database?

Have you implemented Access security or has a password been set for the
database (to very different things)?
 
I can't open any databases. The application starts up but
the databases won't load without a password. My password
does not work.
 
Yes. It is so sad. My other box works fine so I know I
can open those databases without a password. But I can't
do anything on my upgraded system. It even asks for a
password if I try to create a blank database.
 
Are you prompted for a username and password, or just a password? (It
sounds like the former).
 
I'm prompted for both. My network logon ID and password
don't work. I've tried every password I know and I can't
do anything.

Well that's what Joseph was trying to get at. There are two possible
password prompts in Access - a database password has been set; or user-level
security is in play.

It sounds to me as though you have not secured any databases, but you are
joined by default to a workgroup file that has a password set for the Admin
user (which causes the login to appear).

Using Start, Search, find all the *.mdw files on your computer. Hopefully
there's more than one - if only one then post back.

Next use Start, Run, wrkgadm.exe. This will show you the mdw file your
computer is joined to by default - meaning every time you open a database,
it will use this workgroup file.

Click on Join and rejoin the standard system.mdw that ships with Access (it
usually is located in the windows system folder). This mdw, as long as no
one played with it, should have no password set for the Admin user (and thus
you won't get a login prompt).
 
I only have the one file and it is called green_system.mdw
that is a shortcut to a file on the network. My coworker
has the same shortcut on his system and all of his stuff
still works.
 
So that I'm clear. You have Access 2000 installed on your computer.

Is your database secure? i.e. does your coworker open the database by
entering a username/password?

You do not have any mdw files on your computer. You have a shortcut that
points to a mdw file on the network.

What is in the target of this shortcut?
 
My database is not secure. I created it when I had Access
97. My coworker can access it without a username or
password. The only file in that network directory is the
green_system.mdw file. My coworker also has the same
shortcut on his system and does not have any other mdw
file on his system. My system is an upgrade to Access
2000 but his is a new system. I could access all my
databases before I was upgraded without entering a
username/password.
 
We seem to be going in circles.

If you have Access installed on your PC there will be a file named
system.mdw somewhere on it (if not then copy it from another computer and
put it in the windows system folder).

Using Start, Run, wrkgadm.exe click on Join and join this system.mdw
workgroup.

There are MDBs on my computer and only the shortcut to the
network MDW.

I do have Access 2000 installed on my PC but do not have
the system.mdw but a shortcut to the green_system.mdw.

My coworker has Access 2000 and the green_system.mdw
shortcut on his system.

I am prompted for username/password but my coworker is not.

I can't create blank Access databases without being
prompted for a username/password.

I can't get any username/password to work. I also tried
using Admin/<blank> and this also does not work.

Databases on my system and on the network do not allow me
to open them without a username/password. (Even the ones I
created with Access 97 and where I am the owner of them.)

Other people can access the databases without using a
username/password.

None of my coworkers has a file called "system.mdw" on
their PCs and all of them have the link to the file on the
network called "green_system.mdw" so I can't copy this
file and put it on my PC. I've tried to join that
workgroup and I still get prompted for username/password.

I don't know what to do.

What is in this shortcut on your machine (please post what's in the target).

Well that wouldn't work. If the Admin password was blank, you'd get no
login prompt.

Please respond with the answers to all my questions.

I never try to open the green_system.mdw. It doesn't look
like an Access database.

Access does open then it prompts me for the
username/password if I try to open any of the MDB files or
if I try to create a new database.
